King hid his relief. Though they hadnât had time to prep their story, he felt that heâd steered Piper in the right direction. If she was focused on being the eager recruit, she would drive the pace of the interview with her own questions. Hopefully that would keep her from sharing anything that might paint them in a dangerous light.
âIâll be direct with you, Mr. King,â Agent Smith said, turning her blue eyes on him.
âIâd prefer that,â he said, matching her icy demeanor.
âI want to know if you can be trusted to drop this case. As I understand it, Detective White has become a personal friend of yours, since you moved to the city. Thatâs the reason he came to you for help after we declined to open a case.â
âI like to think he came to me because I have a certain skillset, but yes. I suppose it helped that he trusts me.â
âAre you capable of separating your feelings, and any sense of loyalty you have to Detective White, from the situation?â Another piercing blue gaze.
They had a word for stares like that. Eagle-eyed. Her unblinking gaze definitely had a raptor-like quality to it.
âIf youâre asking whether I will help my friend, should he come face to face with the bomber again, yes, Agent Smith. I will put my neck out for him without hesitation.â
âEven if it costs you? We can revoke your license and charge you with willful interference. Bar you from ever having an agency again. You could even spend a year in prison. You wonât be of much use to Detective White or anyone else in prison,â she said without blinking.
King crossed his arms. âIâm not sure itâs against the law to help oneâs friends, Agent Smith. Citizens are allowed to run into burning buildings last I checked.â
âArenât you concerned for your own safety?â she asked. âThe bomber blew up your car. Thatâs more aggression than heâs even shown Detective White.â
King couldnât argue that point. The bomber clearly wanted to warn King off. It made him more certain that he hadnât been wrong about the red Honda or about the onlooker in the red hat. But it also meant that the bomber was ready to pull the kill switch if anyone tried to get between him and White. That obsessiveness didnât bode well for Whiteâs life expectancy.
âYou may think whatever you want of me, Mr. King, but itâs clear that if you continue to run interference between White and the bomber, you could very well get hurt. I donât think that bomb was meant to be a warning. I think it was intended to kill you. That tells me that youâve seen something.â
King refrained from looking away or swallowing. Anything that might make him appear guilty.
She waved the folder again. âAnd I donât think itâs in this folder. You saw something while tailing White and that provoked him. What was it?â
King wanted to lie. He didnât want to hand over evidence to someone whoâd been so dismissive
