CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Stepping back from the table, I checked the time and sighed. I wanted to figure out everything, wanted to know why this had happened, but he was right. I had been awake for nearly twelve hours now, and the morgue had been a dreadful experience. I was so tired. Sitting on the edge of the bed, I tried to will myself to relax.

“Is it possible for us to nap?” I asked.

“I’m certain it is, but I’ve never found it easy.” Sitting on the other bed, he put his feet up, then kicked his shoes off. “I don’t recommend trying right now.”

“Yeah, I would probably have nightmares about what happened to them. I don’t think I will ever be able to forget tonight. I’ve never done anything like that.”

“You did well, and you said the right things to Kavik. He’s a reasonable Alpha. Not all of them are, and under these circumstances, others certainly would have been more aggressive.”

“Is that normal? Them being aggressive?”

“It varies for each Alpha. Alpha werewolves are in charge of a community. Over the centuries, I’ve realized there’s some level of magic to it, not that they confirm or deny that. They closely guard the secrets of how their structuring works and what it truly means. Every Alpha is different, just like every man in power could be. Some take the power of being an Alpha to subjugate the pack, an army of slaves to do their bidding. Others are fatherly, patient and frustrated at the same time but normally would never hurt their own werewolves unless pushed that far. Most live somewhere in the middle of the two extremes, much like a Master or Mistress of a nest, except werewolves are more prone to violence over politics.”

“Kavik must lean to the fatherly side of things,” I said, looking at the television I had yet to turn on. I considered reaching for the remote, but I couldn’t be bothered. My mind was restless, going in circles with the facts we knew, but my body didn’t want to cooperate.

“You did well tonight,” Alexius repeated. “You should know that.”

“Thanks. I was just following your lead. Tonight was a few steps outside of my comfort zone, but this is the job, right?”

“You’ll get more comfortable. You’re already doing better than I believe Isaiah would have expected. I don’t think he sees you as someone who can do this job.”

“And you do?” I chuckled. “Behind a computer, sure, but inspecting dead bodies? You really think I can do this regularly like you do?”

“I think you have a need to stop people like this, and that will push you until there’s nothing you can’t do. Isaiah hasn’t recognized that in you, not yet. I have, and I’m seeing it again now.”

I nodded.

He’s so confident in me.

Ten minutes later, I got up, unable to sit in silence any longer with nothing to do. Everything was repeating in my head, over and over. The face of each person, the photos of them in
