Jezzebelle climbed into Aeryn’s lap and lay down to clean her paws and purred when Aeryn stroked her behind the ears.
“She said we will know which ghoul is David. Mona made sure to mark him,” she told the others.
“Oh, how nice of her. I want to kill her, now,” Sandy seethed through her tears.
“She will get what is due her. We will make sure of that. In the meantime, Aeryn, I do wish you would take me up on my offer to stay at my home until this is over. Sandy and the cat can come with you, if you wish.” Tristan moved to Aeryn and took her hand in his and caressed it gently. “I promise not to make you feel like a prisoner.”
Aeryn smiled softly and said to him, “I know you mean well, and I know that staying at your place is probably the safest thing to do but if I go there, I’m admitting defeat and I refuse to have that woman thinking I’m so helpless that I have to run away and let others protect me.”
“So you would rather stay here and risk yourself and my child?” Tristan set his jaw tightly.
“I’m not risking anything. We already know she won’t come during the day and at night, you three are always around me. During the day I have to work and I’ll be surrounded by my co-workers. She wouldn’t dare come there and try to harm me.”
Tristan gave a firm nod. “Suit yourself. But I would not put anything past her. She is a very resourceful woman.”
“Aeryn,” Sandy started, “maybe he’s right. Maybe you should go to his home. He said I can come with you. It’s not like you’ll be alone there. Won’t you consider it? If not for you, think of your baby.” She looked to Aeryn pleading her to go.
Aeryn looked between Sandy and Tristan. “I am not going. If I go, it looks to her as if she’s already won. I can’t get the things done that I need to do, and most of all, I won’t be able to avenge David.”
“Honey, this isn’t a fight that you have to do on your own! We are here for you, too. I want her to suffer as much as you do for what she did to David. I want to be a part of it, but I don’t want to leave myself sitting here open to her. What happens when you go to work and Tristan isn’t here? Then I’m all alone. At least at his place, we’d all be safe. She won’t come there to get you.” Sandy tried more pleading but it was going unheard.
“Then you go with him. Take Jezzebelle with you, but I am staying here,” Aeryn clearly refused and meant what she said.
“As you wish, love. Then I will stay here with you, and of course Sandy and the cat, if that is okay with you, and even if it is not, I’ll be near enough for you to feel me.
