When they pulled up to the club, Harper saw a police car stationed outside. There was nobody in it. She looked over at Alec questioningly.
"Oh, great," Alec said. "What now?"
"You think they're here because of that boy we saved?" Harper asked. "Maybe your friends didn't get the succubus in time. Or maybe they saw us leaving... or maybe Andrew was able to describe us in enough detail to--"
"Don't jump to conclusions," Alec said. "Do you still have your gun?"
"Yes," Harper said. She reached in her purse and touched the gun fervently. "But I'm not going to use it, Alec. It's one thing to shoot a demon, it's an entirely different manner to shoot a police officer. They can't just be cleaned up and forgotten about."
"Calm down," Alec said. "I'm not asking you to shoot anyone. I just want to make sure you have it. You still have your FBI badge, right?"
Harper nodded.
"Good," Alec said. "Keep your gun in your purse, but make sure you can reach it easily. We might need your badge and gun if things start to get dicey. For now, though, let's just figure out what they want and do our best to get rid of them. The last thing we need is police sniffing around our place of business. Too much goes on here..."
Harper nodded.
"Come on."
The two of them walked into the club together. Harper saw two police officers sitting at one of the VIP tables. She used her Sight on them, but they were perfectly normal, other than being cops. They were sitting with Chloe, Sarah, and Brittney. Conner and Janice were nowhere to be seen. She briefly wondered what Brittney was doing there, but put it out of her mind. Too much was going on to worry about that right now.
"What's going on?" Alec asked, as they approached.
"These officers just had a few questions for us," Chloe said. She made a light face at Harper.
One of the officers stood up. He offered a hand out to Alec. "I'm Detective George Grady, and this is my partner, Dective Marcia Livingston."
"Nice to meet you," Alec said. "I'm Alec Morodan."
"Harper Hawthorne," Harper said, extending her hand to the other officer. Marcia shook it lightly, and then gestured for them to sit.
"Please," she said, "join us."
Alec and Harper both sat down. Harper gave Brittney a questioning look, but her friend just shrugged at her and nodded slightly towards the officers.
"What can we do for you?" Alec asked. He crossed his legs and met George's eyes. Harper saw a burning dislike in them. But the cops were the good guys. Alec looked like he'd to attack one of them at any moment.
"From what I've heard, you're the owner of this club," George said. "Is that right?"
"Yes," Alec said.
"And these women work for you?"
"To some extent," Alec said. "I think of them as partners as opposed to employees. Couldn't keep the place running without them, especially on the weekends."
"Yes," Marcia said, "I've heard Afterlife is very popular on Saturday nights."
Alec shrugged.
