Chapter Sixteen

Charlie and I sat, transfixed, staring at the television. It was playing the news reports from the last night, including information about the passing of the bill that now made our presence in the USA a very bad idea.

“Those, those...bastards!” I yelled suddenly, throwing a pillow at the television. “They might as well have started classing us as terrorists! You can be guaranteed that’s exactly what they’re going to become now!”

“Calm down, Olivia,” Charlie said, watching me. “Someone could hear you, and then we’re all going to be caught.”

I stopped pacing, licking my lips. “You two stay here. I’m going to D.C. to...to work this out with the politicians.”

“No you’re not. You’re protecting me, remember?” Charlie asked. He stood up and grabbed my arm. “You have to stay here, or at least flee back to Canada with us. What if Lucia tracks us down?”

“We lost them ages ago,” I snapped, pulling my arm out of his grip.

“I—we still need you, Olivia. You’re a good friend as well as a good guard. You should stay with us, where you know you won’t be ratted out.”

“It’s strange that the government passed that bill,” Angela said to us, sitting in front of the television and playing with the remote. “They know what it’ll do, segregating so many of its citizens from the rest and leaving them out to dry.”

I turned to look at her, ignoring Charlie. “That’s what I want to explain to the politicians. Before the native wolves track them down.”

“Too late, I think,” Angela said, turning the volume up on the television as “News Flash! Werewolf Slaughters Senators in Private Meeting” flashed across the screen.

“Shit!” I snapped, sitting down to watch it. “The idiots had to do it during the full moon, didn’t they?”

“Six American senators were found slaughtered in this small residential apartment just over an hour ago,” the reporter said, staring down the camera. “Sources indicate that the culprits are werewolves, judging by the damage and the flesh missing from the bodies of the senators. DNA will be needed to confirm the deaths and allow the notification of the families, but there is sufficient evidence around the dwelling to indicate that the senators were Bill Howard, Tony McLoggin, Anthony Homing, Russ Hover, Jane Stuart and Jacki Summers. Each of these senators voted to pass the highly-controversial Bill that was agreed to at around five o’clock this morning.”

“Shit! C’mon, we have to move!” I headed straight for the door, picking up our bags as I went.

“What? Why?”

“Because Lucia was in the background of that last shot! She’s here, in the USA!” I opened the car and threw the bags in, heading for the driver’s door. I couldn’t drive, but I didn’t care at that point.

Angela pushed me away as she reached the car door. “I’ll drive. Charlie’ll hand in the key, and then we’ll go.” She threw her handbag in beside her and sat down, snatching the keys out of my hand. I shook it, feeling the vague pain of a bruise across my palm.
