STEPH
Steph pushed the button to open the sliding doors of the Accident and Emergency department. âMaybe I should get a season ticket. Seems only a few days since I was here last.â
âAt least at this time of night thereâs no trouble getting a parking space.â Hale followed her in and held out his ID card to the nurse sitting behind the reception desk, looking as if she too wished she was fast asleep in her bed.
âWeâre here to follow up on David Richardson. He was brought in by ambulance from Oakwood?â
The nurse unhooked a clipboard from underneath the counter and ran her finger down the list. âAh, yes. David is now on Gurney ward. If you go in the lift along there,â she pointed to her left, âitâs on the third floor. Iâll phone to warn the sister youâll be coming up.â
âHospitals at night are spooky, arenât they?â Steph shivered as they arrived at the third floor.
âYouâve been watching too many psycho films.â
In the silent corridor, the squeak from Haleâs shoes was so loud he tiptoed in an attempt to reduce the noise. Steph giggled at his cartoon character moves, and he frowned to rebuke her. As they were rubbing sanitising gel into their hands, the door opened and a male nurse came out to meet them.
âYouâve come to see David Richardson?â
âThatâs right. How is he?â Hale took the lead.
âHeâs one lucky boy. Lost a lot of blood; weâre giving him a transfusion. Weâve sewn him up and weâll keep him here for a couple of days until he recovers. Heâs awake, if youâd like to see him but donât be long â he needs some sleep.â
âDonât we all!â whispered Hale.
They crept through the double doors and into a side room where a very pale David was lying elevated on a pile of pillows. He smiled as he recognised her. âHi, Steph, how are you?â
âMore to the point, how are you? They told us you should be out of here in a few days.â
âYes. They keep telling me Iâve been lucky, and the blade missed my vital organs and arteries, but made a bit of a mess. Sorry, I think it got all over your clothes.â
âDonât worry about that. The important thing is that youâll be fine. Iâm so pleased.â
Hale took over. âAre you up to answering a few questions, David? We want to catch whoever stabbed you and it helps if we can get going as soon as possible.â
âSure.â
âTake us through what happened at the party.â
David described the argument he had with Luke in the garden, the arrival of the police, the chase, then the fight on the road. He claimed he wasnât sure whoâd stabbed him and said it several times, as if he was trying to convince himself. It was too dark. It might have been Luke or one of his crew. He could recall Steph talking to him before the ambulance came, but everything else was a blank.
âThanks. Weâll need to take a statement from you.
