Just as we exited the tent, Dr. Jill Pittman walked towards us.
âHow did you two get here before me?â
I sighed. âLooking for a missing girl. Thought she might have been it.â
Jill frowned. âNo luck?â
âNope. She looks like our girl but has a different neck tattoo.â I pulled up the picture on my phone.
âShe didnât get it covered up?â
âShe posted her whole life on social media. If she did, she would have posted. We will still wait for the DNA to come back for confirmation, but I donât think itâs her.â I looked back at the tent for a minute. âI am curious, though. When will you be able to tell if she was buried alive?â
âYou think she was alive when the killer buried her?â Jill looked from me to Tony and back.
I glanced at Tony and shrugged. âI do.â
âIt is weird that her eyes were still open even after being buried.â
âI see.â Jill inched toward the tent. âShe must be fresh because nothing had gotten to her yet. Something would have eaten her eyes first.â
My stomach soured. That was not the image I wanted to walk away with. As I walked across the sand, I kept staring at my feet. Was there anyone else buried here?
Were we stomping across their bodies?
âBest to not think about it.â Tony placed a finger underneath my chin and pushed up. âStop doing that before you walk into something.â
âPoint made.â
âAnd we canât dig up the whole beach.â
He always knew what I was thinking. He looked at my face and could see the thoughts forming in my mind. I wasnât sure how I felt about that.
We returned to the field office and relayed what we learned to Davies and Hattie. Usually, her office felt spacious. Large enough to fit at least ten people comfortably. But with the four of us, it felt cramped. Something else was taking up spaceâsomething we couldnât see. The air was heavy and anxious. Davies sat at her desk. Her forefinger tapped against her chin every few seconds.
âSo it wasnât her?â ASAC Davies looked skeptical. Or maybe annoyed. This case was getting out of hand. âSo we found another dead body that has nothing to do with the Kai West case? How is that even possible?â
I glanced at Tony. âI donât know, but thatâs what happened. The women look alike, but the tattoos on the neck are different.â
âWhat are the odds?â
âThatâs a good question,â said Hattie. âIâm looking for missing person reports that match her description, but I have found nothing yet.â
Davies sighed heavily. âIâm getting calls daily about Kai West and closing his case. We canât close his case until we see if there is any validity to Luditzâs claims. And we canât do that until we find his daughter or someone who has seen her on the island.â
âThe last thing she posted on social media was her getting on a plane. Nothing once she got here.â
Daviesâ head fell into her hands. Something was frustrating her. At first, I thought it was us.
