Chapter Nine

Victor

IT HAD been four hours since David had walked off into the darkness of the surrounding streets, and Victor was starting to get worried.

Technically, he’d been worried ever since their car had pulled up to the old factory. Victor had never been the kind of man who handled stress well, so he’d sat behind the wheel, gaze fixed on the door, waiting and hoping that all of them would come out alive. At one point, he’d taken a short walk up to the door itself, wondering if he could hear anything that would give him a clue if they were succeeding or not.

He’d found a pair of glasses, cracked and bent, the thick frames bent out of shape. Glasses that, if Victor recalled correctly, he’d seen on the photo of the latest kidnap victim.

Now he was sitting in front of the TV, slowly turning those glasses over in his hands as he watched the news. The quick-paced Arabic of the presenter was something of a welcome distraction, allowing him to focus on the beautiful puzzle of the language, the way it fit together so neatly and logically, helping Victor take his mind off of David. The picture of the latest victim—Randall Lewis—was flashing across the screen again, thick-framed glasses perched on his nose. Victor glanced at the glasses he held once again.

There was no doubt. They were Lewis’ glasses.

Hearing nearly silent footsteps approach, Victor turned his head, heart leaping in his throat. It was Jed, though, not David. Disappointment twisted his lips into a frown, which only deepened when he saw that Jed was completely naked.

“For God’s sake, Journey,” Victor muttered, turning his gaze back to the television. “Would it kill you to put some pants on?”

It wasn’t that Jed was unattractive. Far from it. Jed was exactly the kind of man that Victor otherwise might have tried dating, but he was… Jed. Victor didn’t hate him either. That would require a lot of emotional investment in Jed, and Victor was not that invested. No, Victor had come to think of Jed as more like the annoying little cousin one saw at family gatherings that just sat around and picked his nose. Vaguely irritating, but not enough to get worked up over.

Unless Jed was doing something spectacularly frustrating, like his previous adventures in dry-humping.

“It might,” Jed replied in an overly innocent drawl. The facade didn’t fool Victor, though. Jed claimed not to know any of the language, but his eyes were fixed on the television, a particularly intent look on his face as he leaned back against the counter and watched. Most likely Jed had picked up bits and pieces of the language, either here or on previous trips.

Stunningly, Jed was an amazingly fast learner. He hid it very well.

“Well, it might kill me if I have to get an eyeful.” Victor sighed. “Have you heard anything from David? Has he called you?”

A quick look flicked over at Victor, Jed’s face caught somewhere between a smirk and an incredulous little frown.
