Another hour’s ride, and we’re much farther into the foothills, approaching the northern territory and the mountains what house the Rift. It’s broad daylight, yet a chill rolls down my back. We’re too close to the Rift for my comfort. Ain’t just vampires what hunt humans. Plenty of other outlaws don’t care about sunlight, and they’ll snack on a human just as easily as humans snack on bacon.

Layne points at the mountains. “Is that…?”

“The northern mountains, yes,” I say. Boone once told me he lived up in that area. I wonder if that was around the time of his transformation into a vampire, or if he still has a home there, or what.

When we come around the base of another foothill, our horses both stop, prompted by neither Layne nor me, but something else, something to do with magic. In front of us, nestled in the trees, is a two-story log cabin. A narrow lane leads down to the cabin, short trees and bushes rising up on either side. The cabin itself looks unassuming enough, but strong magic coats the air—if I weren’t a charmslinger, I probably wouldn’t notice the feeling of it. A regular human would just feel the hairs rise on the back of their neck. Me, though, I can feel the magic itself, as if oil hangs in the air, collecting on my skin.

“Well,” Layne says, brushing at the tops of his hands. He’s likely feeling what I’m feeling but not understanding it yet. A few more months of slinging charms, and he’ll put it together. “Are you ready to talk to some witches?”

Not these ones, I think. But I click my tongue, urging Kitty forward down the lane.
