Chapter Thirty Six
Langley, Virginia, USA
âWhat do you mean you lost them?â screamed Hogg.
âThey are a pair of fucking civilians, and one of them is a fucking kid. Doesnât say a fucking lot for your team, does it?â
âSir, with all due respectâ, replied Brad Anderson, Head of the infamous Special Activities Division or SAD for short.
âDonât fucking start that shit with me, Anderson. By saying it, itâs fucking clear that you have no respect which I already know, but without me, you have no fucking way of paying your mortgage so get to the fucking point.â
âThey had help. Which sir⦠you did not brief us on. Two of my best agents are now incapacitated as a result of that gap in intelligence, sir.â
âBe very careful, Anderson, how this conversation progresses.â
Anderson paused.
Hogg exhaled. He was the one that needed to be careful here. He had used off-book operators up to now, but as soon as he got a ping from one of the phones and realised his prey was in Morocco, he had to act quickly and that meant official agency assets out of Tangier. He had rushed things with hindsight and so hadnât briefed Anderson with regards to Di Angeli, or âEl Locoâ.
âOK, letâs both pause a beat. Tell me the situation with the two agents. Exactly.â
âThey were both shot with precision from a range of about sixty yards. Both shot in the wrist and the ankle. To locate areas not covered by body armour requires extraordinary skill, executed under pressure. Both were out of action instantly. No brass at the scene but 9mm rounds caused the injuries.
Hogg breathed.
âShit; that can only be one person. I didnât think she would expose herself so easily. It can only be El Loco.â
âEl Loco. You are joking. Sheâs dead. Moscow op went south.â
âNo. We burned her. She had a red notice but she escaped.â
âSir, I donât mean to state the obvious, but El Loco was one of the best operators we ever had in SAD. The intel that she knows, of some of our blackest ops, is almost encyclopedic. Why have we not recalled all those assets? Shit is right, deep shit. Thatâs over two hundred assets.â
âEl Loco is many things, but she is first and foremost a fucking patriot. There is zero risk of her burning U.S. assets.â
âBut she brought down, expertly I might add, two of my best men. She discharged those shots under fire with clinical location accuracy, collecting her brass and doing it at rapid speed. Not a lot of patriotism there.â
âThe difference is that they were shooting at her. Once you cross that line then you have to finish the job, or you get taken off the board. Anyway, the main thing is, we know her Achilles heel now: her child. She has been off the grid, a complete ghost, for four years. Not a sniff and now she breaks cover immediately. That is where we start. Well, this is where you start. This is now priority number one and now you know what we are dealing with.
