Chapter 15
The psych ward is never the nice part of the hospital. Itâs not where they blow the budget on decor or pleasing architecture. Maybe itâs an intelligent move, as I do watch a woman in a pink bathrobe throw what I hope is chocolate pudding around the day room while Iâm waiting for a visitors pass. Orderlies surround her. When they get a good grip on her, her eyes fasten on me at the reception desk.
âDevil! Itâs the devil!â She yowls this on repeat as they drag her away.
Iâm not overly impressed. One of the few perks of my job is that creeping me out has become a challenge on par with perpetual motion or time travel.
âMs. Fell.â
I turn. The female agent from last night looks a little worn around the edges â but only a little. Tough old girl. âHow is she?â
âCalmer. We gave her some dolls, and thatâs relaxed her a great deal. Anytime I try to question her, the progress is undone.â She does the FBI version of a smile â a slightly softer frown. âDo you have some magic trick to get her talking?â
âSorry. Lost the wand a while ago.â Iâm accepting a pass from a nurse, clocking the cameras, the exits, the staff. âA doctor checked her over, Iâm assuming.â
âYes.â
âWhat are her injuries?â
âNone, other than a few bruises.â
I wasnât expecting that. I let it go for now. âWhat do you think of security here?â
âItâs good. Itâs not great.â
I hold out my hand. âYou can head home.â
âIâll stay,â she says, shaking with me.
âHer parents wonât be here for a while. I got a first name, but we still donât know who she is.â
âThen Iâll be here for a while.â
I nod. âWhatâs your name?â
âSpecial Agent Sylvia Dodd.â
âIâm Beth.â
âPleasure,â she says, and signals me up the hall.
âIs there an observation room?â
âYes. Thatâs where Iâm remaining, mostly. She seems more at ease when sheâs by herself.â Sylvia points at a pair of doors, grasping the knob of the one on the left. âI have a question,â she says.
âShoot.â
âWhoever did this to her is going to be very sorry, is that right?â
âYeah, he will. Might take a while.â
âWhyâs that?â
âRICO wants him.â
She does the FBI version of a grimace â slightly deeper frown. âThen he wonât pay at all.â
âSylvia, trust me.â I open the door. âGus threw his poo at the wrong monkey.â
The room is padded. Itâs not a movie invention; they actually do that. Partly so the patient doesnât hurt herself, but also to make the whole place a soft, yielding womb, a room-wide bed. Sheâs in the corner, a line of four dolls in front of her. Another is in her hand. Sheâs brushing its hair. Sheâs humming, and I detect right away that this isnât something I can dance to. Itâs a random, âHmmmmm.â Then brush, brush, brush the dollieâs hair. Then âHmmmmm,â and another long rest. The vibration must comfort her somehow, the sound of her own voice countering the hum of the halogens this room is lit by.
