Chapter Twelve

“You have satellite?” Matty finally noticed during a break between episodes. They were settled side by side on the couch after they’d paused their Doctor Who-athon to order some pizza. The takeaway was long gone, both of them having been hungrier than they’d realised when they had ordered the first time around. He watched the channel for a minute. “You into baseball?”

To his amusement, Liam flushed a bit as he shrugged. “Just like sports in general. I guess I’ve gotten in the habit of turning ESPN Oz on automatically.”

“Nothing wrong with that.” Matty stretched then studied the action on the telly. He knew the basics of the sport but it seemed pretty slow-going to him.

Liam levered himself up when the knock on the door signalled the arrival of their food.

“You sit. I’ll get it.” Matty made to rise but Liam waved him off.

“Nah. I’m fine. Be right back.” He limped towards the door.

“I’ll be here,” he joked. A few seconds later, he made a liar of himself and decided to get up too since the game Liam had left on the TV wasn’t exactly compelling. He used the restroom, washed up then wandered into the kitchen.

“There you are.” Liam smiled at him. “One Barbecue Meat Lover’s, a side of garlic bread and a Greek salad.”

“Oh my God. Fuck, that smells good.” Matty’s mouth was watering. “Can I grab you a beer?” He walked to the fridge and pulled it open.

“Yeah. You know, I think I’ll just bring the whole lot into the living room if that’s okay with you.”

Matty closed the fridge. “No problem. Can I carry something?”

“Nah, got it.”

They settled on the couch with the packages spread out on the coffee table, and immediately the cats began circling.

“Shoo! You little mooches.” Liam ineffectively tried to keep the kittens from the food. “God, you just ate!” He got Digby’s front paws off the table and immediately Beasley jumped up. Liam cursed and grabbed Beasley, then reached to block Digby’s second try.

“So did we,” Matty reminded Liam, not bothering to hide his laughter.

“Ha ha, very funny. You want to stop yukking it up and maybe help me here?”

Matty was still chuckling as he picked up Digby, gave him cuddles then pulled a piece of chicken from the pizza. He stood and walked over to Liam’s bedroom. “Come on.”

“They’re not going to be happy in there,” Liam warned but carried Beasley over to join him.

Matty smiled as he set Digby down and immediately tore the chicken in two, offering one bit to the kitten, who snatched it out of his fingers. Beasley struggled against Liam’s hold and jumped down to join in the feast with his own piece. Matty gently pressed Liam back out of the way and closed the door while they were distracted.

“There.” Matty grinned at Liam. “Problem solved.”

“Hmm. Maybe for a minute.” Despite his grudging words, he was grinning back at Matty and he nearly caught his breath. Damn, Liam was gorgeous when he smiled.

Matty quickly headed back into the living room before his arousal became evident.
