Chapter 32: JSFA, WTF?

Theresa and Jimbo Janson had their living room TV on the live CNN coverage of the scene at CNOVation. Jimbo had already expected some major press splash moves by Richards, but not something cooked up out of the Justice Department. Not this high profile with such a huge downside if the plan backfired. But, then again, the more he and Theresa talked it out, the clearer it became that Richards and Clark and Charles didn’t care about getting an indictment in February or a conviction in two years. All that mattered to Richards’ camp was reversing his downward spiral in the polls. And two huge national security cases dominating the news and social media for the next three weeks until Election Day could be enough. Neither of them could eat anything.

Bray called at 8 am with more unnerving news. Theresa answered and put it on speaker. “We have a conference call set up with Yvette Penzer and Jason Blanche, counsel to the campaign, at 8:30. There’s something going on with our servers again.”

“Ok, but we’ve got hacks coming at us all the time. Why is this different?” Theresa looked quizzingly at Jimbo.

“Because this time our outside cyber tech swat team says there’s no hackers. It’s the federal government in our network.” Theresa stood and knocked her coffee cup over. It annoyingly clanged against the glass table, cracked and spilled the Sumatra blend she had just ground this morning. “They label it the call is coming from inside the house. But terminology aside, we alerted legal and will report what we know to you at 8:30.” Just then the chyron on the TV screen started flashing Attorney General press conference called for 8:25 am.

“Maybe you should make the call at 9.” Theresa sounded glum, not at all like her usual 110% upbeat self. “There’s more we’ll need to talk about after the new AG does her press conference.”

Jimbo added. “Turn on CNN.”

After a few seconds Bray said “Shit. But how do we know it’s about the campaign?”

Theresa and Jimbo both exclaimed. “It’s October. In DC, everything is about the campaign.”

Bray responded. “Of course. I’ll tell legal and we’ll call you on the secure line at 9. I’ve got the coverage on my iPad now. Theresa, we should get you on the screens today. Whatever this is, we should be in today’s news cycle.”

“Agreed. I’ll call Rachel. See if she can bump whoever she had lined up for tonight. Get started on a press release. We can figure out what bullshit story we need to deny later, but for now…”

“We need to get ahead of this. Understood.” Bray disconnected after completing her sentence.

Theresa looked at Jimbo. She got up and grabbed a small half brush and dustpan to sweep up the broken pieces of the coffee mug. “I’m getting a new cup. You want anything?”

“No thanks, honey. It’s way too early for what I want right now.” His attempt to lighten the mood didn’t work. “Okay, sorry. Look, there’s a huge pile of more shit coming.
