Justice and Dupé were both sweating profusely by the time they had walked to the parking garage. It was a four-level structure, purely functional in design. The busy mall meant that every single space on the bottom level was filled. The two detectives werenât sure where Noodles was supposed to sell from, so they split up. The garage floors werenât largeâfour aisles. After searching the first level, they took the stairs and exited onto the second level. They scanned the garage. It was just as full as the first level. In one of the back corners, they made out the shape of a man leaning against a wall. A faint orange dot of a lit cigarette was just visible in his hand. He looked up as the door boomed shut, echoing through the concrete structure.
The two detectives began walking toward the direction of the individual in the corner. They could see that he was a big man wearing a white tank top that revealed large, undefined arms covered in tattoos. When they were about halfway to him, Justice asked loudly, âAre you Noodles?â
Immediately the man sprinted to a row of cars. âI guess that answers that question,â said Dupé. The two detectives took off after the man, but he had disappeared in a row of minivans. He moved surprisingly well for someone of his size and stature. The two detectives jogged to the end of the row, stooping as they ran to see between the cars.
âNoodles, we are detectives with the Avon Police Department. We just want to ask you a few questions. No big deal,â Justice announced, not truly believing that his words would make much of a difference. He had only encountered one person who had initially run then give himself up when Justice called out to him. The kid had only been sixteen and ran because he had cheated on a math test and assumed the detective was investigating. Justice didnât think this situation would turn out quite like that.
Justice motioned for Dupé to continue down the next aisle. They had just started to move once more when âGypsies, Tramps, and Thievesâ blared from Justiceâs pocket. Dupé looked back wild-eyed and mouthed some words Justice couldnât make out. He pulled out the phone. âHi, Mom. This is a bad time.â
Noodles popped out from behind a green minivan and opened fire on Justice, hitting him in the chest. The concussion from the gunfire was deafening in the concrete garage. Justice staggered, falling behind a pickup.
âWhatâs all that noise, Blake?â Wandaâs voice was accusatory. âI can hardly hear you.â
âJustice! You all right?â
âItâs a bad time,â Justice growled. He popped his head out from behind the truck holding one of his Kimbers in one hand, cell phone in the other. Dupé was crouched behind a vehicle on the other side of the aisle, several rows up. Dupé looked back, and Justice nodded his head toward his partner to let him know he was all right. He made out the large frame of Noodles perched behind the van about twelve to fifteen cars past Dupé.
