“So don"t give him a choice. Just bring him out. What"s the
point of dating someone if you don"t go out together?”
What was the point indeed? “Maybe.”
“Hal and I miss you. If we don"t see you tonight, maybe we
can get together for dinner or something next week. If you ask
sweetly, Hal may even cook.”
I laughed. How had it gotten to the point where I was not just
avoiding mine and Aaron"s places but all of the people we knew in
common too? I felt like a paranoid fool. Rob was my friend; there
was no reason to let Aaron have him in the breakup. “I"ve missed
you guys too,” I said.
“Seriously, think about coming out tonight.”
“I will.” And I gave it what I thought was a lot of
consideration. When I got off the phone with Rob, I started to think
that it was actually a good idea. I wanted to dance and I wanted to
show off Jonathan. I wanted to prove that I was really okay. And I
was okay. That was the surprising thing. The prospect of running
into Aaron didn"t scare me as much as it would have a few weeks
before.
But talking Jonathan into going out would be difficult. He"d
told me that he wanted to see me but didn"t want to be seen with me.
But maybe Rob was right, I thought. Maybe I should simply not
give Jonathan a choice.
I was still in what I thought of as my writing clothes—a T-shirt
and a pair of destroyed jeans that I should have thrown out eons
before; I liked how they fit, though, so I never could throw them
out—when Jonathan showed up a little while later.
“Hey, J,” I said as I let him into the apartment.
“Hi.” His gaze traveled the whole length of my body until it
settled on my feet. I was barefoot. He stared. At length, he said,
“You have really nice feet.”
I laughed. “Well, there"s a compliment. Thanks. My friend
Allie and I went for pedicures yesterday.”
“Pedicures?” Jonathan asked.
