Chapter 15

‘Tis a blessing of Jeeah, passed down through the synods—or so my father told me when I first experienced the glowing along my wrists and temples. He said ‘twas Jeeah’s way of providing during the steps and then synods after the impact. Some families had the responsibility of using their Jeeah-given blessing to bring light and hope to those around them. Unfortunately, I didn’t see much light and hope around me, or in Eduwix. When I questioned Father about it, he said there were some who coveted the blessing, who strove to acquire the same power but to use it for evil. Father called them sanyalee. Eduwix was one of these, and he haunted me all my steps.

By the time Hest stood in front of the dungeon, his small following had grown into an entourage. He had led the way, anxious and frustrated and wondering why everyone else couldn’t move faster. The delay of finding Lugh, who had had to be awoken, and reporting back to the king had been bad enough but the time it took to add fifteen more Rittider to their group and send another contingent around to the back entrance to the dungeons had driven him insane. At least Athair had wasted no time after dismissing the duene from the dance. The only thing holding Hest back now was the single word he’d had from Usheen moments before: Wait.

“Are you all right, boiwith?” Lugh laid a hand on Hest’s shoulder, drawing him away from the rest.

He nodded.

“Nay, I need a truthful answer. What’s going on with the arc lukesure? Your eyes have been steadily changing to full silver and back.”

Hest cocked an ear toward Sydur, who was still directing guard placements. Guessing that he would be a few moments yet, he lowered his voice and turned to the jiddee’adar.

“I’m not all right. My arc lukesure has been taken by the same madman who killed his bratnoor. On top of that, the one who I’m supposed to marry has been kidnapped and claimed by an imposter.” He rubbed his knuckles, trying to work the pain out of them. He must have punched the wall harder than he thought.

“They hurt?” Lugh motioned to Hest’s fingers.

“Aye, a deep ache. Been that way since...” He trailed off as the realization hit. They’d been that way ever since Usheen had sent him the vision of the cavern. “It’s not my pain!” Clenching his teeth together, he tried to gain control of his anger. “What has he done to Usheen?”

“That is why you brought me, boiwith. We will exact judgment. That I vow.”

“Rittider, moregot,” Sydur called out. “We are ready. Scubhear, what can you tell us about what we’ll be facing?”

Hest glanced about. “From what I was able to gather, Liam has the princess in the hidden cavern under the dungeon.” He took a deep breath, glanced at the Rittider around him, and made up his mind. “Not only does he have the princess, but he has the arc lukesure as well.
