Chapter Eighteen

Charges Accrued

Grand Theft, Piracy, Unauthorized Use of Company Property, Destruction of Property

“Coming up on the Altona now, Captain,” came Shi’s soft but confident voice from the Mayhem’s shipboard comms.

“Very good.” The Captain kept her eyes on the closest screen as she sat almost motionless in place. “Bring us into sensor range and match their V on a parallel course. I don’t want them getting spooked before we’re ready to go.”

“You got it.”

It was two days after their stopover at Excaden Station, and the Blazar Bitches (minus their pilot) were gathered around the “windows” in the mess hall, waiting eagerly to see the final phase of their plan in action.

“You sure you don’t want some, Phera?” prompted Steph, angling a bowl of popcorn ve and Adryel had been munching on for the last ten minutes toward her.

“N…”

Phera, right then caught between wanting to throw up, wet her pants, or maybe jog laps around the hab cylinder, swallowed hard and gave her ashen face a minute shake.

“No thanks.”

“Breathe,” Straya ordered gently but firmly, squeezing her shoulder with her usual half-smile. “If you pass out, you’re going to miss all the fun.”

Not trusting herself to speak, Phera just nodded slightly and blew out a shaky breath.

“Yeah, don’t sweat it,” added Adryel around a mouthful of popcorn. “Everyone’s nervous their first time.”

“I guess you have a point there.”

Despite her roiling nerves, Phera couldn’t stop herself from snorting out a laugh. And, with it, came a loosening of some of the tension in her shoulders.

“My first big heist as a pirate really isn’t that much scarier than hooking up with Miri Petirin during summer camp senior year,” she teased somewhat brittly, although still managing a smile.

“Oooh!”

Steph’s expression grew somehow even more slyly amused upon hearing that.

“Church camp?”

“Yep.”

Snickering far more genuinely this time, Phera snatched up a handful of popcorn for no other reason than to give her faintly trembling hands something to do.

“We skipped out on the testimony meeting one morning and I ate her out by the lake instead.”

“Why, Phera, you absolute sinner,” drawled the Captain from her spot next to Lem, the sleepless pits of her amber eyes twinkling with wicked amusement as she gave her an approving leer. “I knew there was a reason I liked you.”

Awash in a sea of jittery, nervous energy, Phera batted her eyelashes at the Captain where she sat behind the table.

“Hey, when you lose your vacation to your conservative parents trying to brute-force some piety into you, you’ve gotta make your own fun where you can.”

“We’re in position,” Shi’s voice cut in before the Captain could respond to that bit of shameless flirtation. “Signal whenever you’re ready, Cap.”

“Excellent.”

With that totally calm, confident declaration, the Captain’s demeanor shifted from teasing to serious, and an anticipatory silence fell over the mess as she straightened up from her lounging position against her first mate. Then, with a flick of her wrist, the projection of the Altona that everyone had been watching zoomed in so that the bulbous hauler now took up the entirety of the curving wall in front of them.
