Chapter Seventeen

CCXXXI (Present)

Nissa could not remember the last time she felt fear. Even clinging onto the mountainside above the clouds, she knew if she fell to the bottom that she would be unscathed. The climb was not dangerous, but it was difficult. The slope was rough and craggy, and finding a path required sure footing.

The wind howled relentlessly, but Nissa remained impervious to its biting cold. Dressed in sturdy black boots, to match her black, loose clothing, she had tied back her pastel-blue hair to keep it from being swept over her eyes by the gusts. The voices of her people echoed in the wind, their cheers resounding from below. Like her, they understood everything was about to change; by scaring the Pure Bloods into the Omi's territories, Nissa's people could no longer remain hidden. Their enemies would be ready for them, but Nissa was not afraid. Her people had been waiting centuries for a fight.

As she ascended further above the clouds, she wondered if any others had ever gone this far. If she were still human, the high altitude would have induced dizziness and breathlessness. The sub-zero temperatures would have inflicted frostbite upon her skin. The dense clouds and treacherous wind made seeing almost impossible. Surely, no one could survive these conditions.

Yet, someone had.

Nissa came upon the unbelievable sight of human male faces carved into the mountainside. The noses of the men were at least twenty feet in length and fifteen feet in width. Did the heretics build these structures? If so, why? And how?

In front of the four faces, there was a flat piece of the mountain where she could stand. It was not flat by natural forces. Rather, some incredible technology had cut through the mountain at some point in time.

Turning away from the imposing faces, Nissa shifted her gaze toward Eden and the other territories of Arcadia, though the thick clouds obscured her vision. As the wind intensified, its powerful gusts pressed her against the monumental human carvings. This was precisely why she had embarked on this arduous climb: The wind was trying to tell her something, and she had ascended to hear it better.

Closing her eyes, Nissa inhaled deeply, letting the wind's essence fill her senses. Amidst its whispers, she discerned an unmistakable scent—the return of her master.

Her people would celebrate wildly when they heard the news. After centuries of waiting, the Chief Ichu had returned.
