Sally punches the steering wheel. “That bimbo tramp! How dare she try and knock me off! If she had just kept her two cents to herself, Mark would have allowed me into the auction room! He needs thorough support!”

Cassie holds her breath, willing her laugh to stay down.

“God, I wish I had given that bitch a piece of my mind!” Sally spits, flooring her foot on the accelerator.

“Why didn’t you then?” Cassie asks as they slow down and ease at a red light. “And I am quite certain he knows exactly what he is doing. I can’t imagine a man like him, in his profession, needing thorough support.”

“I didn’t want to sound petty, did I? Men hate that in women.”

“Right. Luckily, you saved it for inside the car,” Cassie mutters.

Ignoring Cassie’s remark, Sally says, “Oh, I bet she is clawing into him as we speak!”

Cassie glances out the window. She props her elbow on the arm rest and rests her head in her hand. “Most likely,” she says coolly.

“Gee, thanks for your support,” Sally snaps.

A deep laugh rumbles from Cassie’s mouth. She coughs it out.

“What’s wrong with you?” Sally asks, side-glancing Cassie. “And wipe that silly smirk off your face! I’m glad you find all of this amusing. Do you feel good knowing Cheyanne has claimed your little boyfriend and you are now just used leftovers?”

“Wow, is that meant to hurt me?” Cassie snarls, baring her teeth. “Matt is a free boy! I don’t care what he does or with who. I mean, it’s going to be humiliating when you call your so-called boyfriend and find out he isn’t interested in you that way.”

Sally grips the steering wheel so hard her hands shake. The tension is thickening; even a butcher’s knife wouldn’t be able to cut through the tension. “How do you know? You’re just a child. How about you just keep your nose in your own business and stay the hell out of mine?”

Cassie shrugs, her gaze returning to the road in front of her. They’re only a few kilometres from their turn off. The shabby rows of houses are now behind them, left behind with the dustier coloured grass, rusty fence lines and bombed out cars parked along the street.

Crossing the bridge into the greener, healthier parts of Maroochydore, Cassie spots fishermen along the mangroves holding fishing rods, patiently waiting for the next bite. A two seater boat cruises by at chill speed, finding a destination to throw some lines in.

“I’ll be glad to stay out of your problems, but when you find out Mark is a married man, don’t come crawling to me,” Cassie says.

“He is definitely not a married man! You’re just envious someone as attractive as Mark is interested in me and not you. You can’t have everything, Cassie.”

Rolling her eyes, Cassie laughs. It comes out a little more sadistic than intended. “Oh sure. I am terribly envious that Mark is married to Meghan. You know that beautiful bimbo that is clawing into him, and
