The next few weeks are a blur of school work, work work and witch work. And I find I am really, truly exhausted when I finally fall into bed after midnight each night.
The spells theyâve put on me seem to be working, or else, no one has tried to attack or hex me since the incident in the pool, which Iâm incredibly thankful for. It gives me the space to focus on the more important task of learning how to do magic.
In Professor Mastersâ class, weâve done a few spells together. Mostly just enhancing the protection spells that are already there. When we work together, it works. I can feel the power in me, and I can feel it feeding into the spell.
But when I try to do anything on my own, it fails spectacularly.
Despite that the boys swear Iâm a witch with the power of illusion and, I guess, shadows, Iâve not managed to cast anything it on cue. Itâs way too weird to try to change the shape of my face without contour.
They are incredibly patient with me, which is a bit of a surprise, especially with Gideon. Who has always liked to push me to be my best, but even he seems to know that I need an adjustment period.
Iâve read The Basics of Witchcraft multiple times, and it doesnât seem to help. The limitations that it covers donât make sense to me, or maybe it makes too much sense and that is why I canât get my magic to work on its own. Iâm standing in my own way.
âWhat are you thinking?â Ezra asks from next to me. I roll onto my side to look at him. I hadnât even realized that he was awake.
My cheeks go pink. Weâd spent last night studying, and I really mean studying. He brought me a book of incantations and weâd gone over the principles of using incantations in spells. Then heâd had me try to use one alone.
It hadnât worked, so weâd tried again and again, until neither of us would keep our eyes open. Weâd passed out on my bed. If this happened at the beginning of term, I might have had some reservations about it, but Iâve slowly, slowly started to trust them since then. Nothing has happened to make me think they arenât looking out for me. Theyâve stayed out of my head with the communication spell, and theyâve all kept their distance physically, waiting for me to take the lead on that.
Well, Hardin has a hard time with that and touches me far more than the other three, but I find myself not minding so much. If Iâm honest, I want them to touch me more often. So waking up to Ezra in my bed isnât as distressing as I might have thought.
In fact, itâs kind of nice.
He turns on his side too, mimicking my position, hands curled under his chin like mine. âIâm thinking about how much of a failure of a witch I am.
