Once I’ve washed us both and the hot water has turned Sachelle’s body a flushed pink color, I draw her out of the shower and wrap a large white towel around her. She doesn’t protest or push me away as I massage the water from her back, her breasts, her arms.

“I like you like this, little fox,” I murmur, blotting the water from her calves and straightening up. “An ass-fucking makes you so obedient. I’ll remember that.”

“I’m just too tired to fight you anymore.” Even as she says it, her arm curves around me and she rests her cheek on my shoulder. I cup my hand around the nape of her neck and hold her there.

“Don’t fight me then. Be a good girl and let me do what needs to be done.” I pick her up and carry her to my bed.

“What is it you’re really after?” she asks as I tuck the blankets around her. “My money? My status? My body?”

I gaze down at her beautiful face. “Just you, Sachelle. My hard-won prize after all these years of fighting.”

“I don’t like the idea of being someone’s prize.”

“That’s because you don’t know how hard I’ve fought for you, even before I even saw you.”

“You can’t make this about me before you even met me.”

I sit down on the edge of the bed and stroke her damp hair back from her face. “It wasn’t until I laid eyes on you that I knew all the battles had been worth it. Her, I said to myself. She’s the one I bled and suffered for all these years.”

Sachelle’s cheeks grow dusky with a faint blush. “I didn’t think you could be romantic. Or is this another one of your tricks?”

I take her palm and press it over my heart. “There are no tricks here.”

She glances up at my forehead. “No, all your tricks live up there.”

I smile down at her as I feel my heart beat faster against her fingers. “It’s good for you that I have a sensible head, because my heart wants to give you everything you want.”

That would be the worst thing I could do because what she wants will get her killed.

Her fingers move over the dove wings tattoo and up to my shoulder, and she traces a circular knot of shiny white scar tissue a few inches below my collarbone. “What’s this?”

“A burn.”

“It doesn’t look like a burn. It looks like a bullet wound. Right through this poor bird’s wing.”

I kiss her mouth. “You need to sleep, and I need to get some things done before I come to bed. Close your eyes, little fox.”

Obediently, her eyes drift closed. She murmurs against the pillow, “My parents don’t know where I am.”

“I’ll call them.”

“They’ll be angry with you. You defiled their pristine daughter and now you’re keeping her in your apartment.”

I laugh softly. “Pristine daughter?”

Her eyes open, and then close again. “Fine. I’m not a virgin. Mum and Dad think I am, though, so they’re going to give you hell.
