Chelsea was late. She was always late but today was exceptionally bad. Maddie had been waiting for almost an hour when she finally saw her friend run into the diner and then, as she spotted the booth Maddie was sitting at, came over to join her friend. Breathless, Chelsea slid in and ordered an iced tea when the waitress came over to hand her a menu.

Maddie stared at her, waiting for an explanation. When her friend had finally caught her breath and had taken a long sip of her iced tea, she smiled apologetically over at her. “God, I’m so sorry, Maddie, but I was stuck dealing with my bastard of a husband.”

Maddie looked at her friend, stunned. She hadn’t had any idea that Chelsea and her husband were having problems. She had just been at their house last weekend for a barbeque and they had seemed as lovey-dovey as always. “What happened? What’s wrong?”

Chelsea waved her off and then began tearing up. “Well, I caught the bastard cheating on me.”

Maddie looked at her, thinking that maybe her friend was extrapolating from something she had misunderstood. “What? How do you know that?”

Chelsea snorted. “From the evidence of my own eyes.”

“So, you personally saw him with another woman?”

Chelsea nodded. “Yep. It’s that slutty secretary of his, the new one that I thought was such a bad idea when I first saw her. I knew she would be trouble.”

Maddie tried to get her friend to focus. “What exactly did you see?”

Chelsea was about to answer, but the waitress showed up to take their lunch order. “I saw him cuddling up to her in the parking lot. I went there to give him his damn lunch that he left in the fridge. The lunch that I pack for him every god damn day.”

As lunch continued, Maddie commiserated with her friend and then, she began to think that there might be a way to get back at Chelsea’s wayward husband. Outlining her idea to her friend, Maddie felt herself being drawn into the drama and didn’t see how she could escape it.

Two days later, Maddie came over to Chelsea’s house for dinner and flirted shamelessly with Rex, Chelsea’s husband. She had worn the skankiest outfit she could find in her closet, and she had to admit that Rex had never looked so hard at her in the three years they had known each other.

When they had gotten a moment alone, Maddie had blatantly made her play for him, giving him a kiss and rubbing up against him. He had actually been ready to jump on her right then and there, but she had held him off and convinced him to wait until the next evening when they could meet at a hotel in the next county over.
