Chapter 42

I noticed that when Bastian wasn’t around, the anger and urge to kill would increase. He tried to come visit daily, but sometimes he was prevented from seeing me. I decided that I was going to search out this Cyrus Bane that Bastian had told me about.

I found Cyrus in the library, pouring over a book. He looked up as soon as I stepped into the room. I wasn’t sure how he knew I was there. Most people couldn’t see or hear me, and I doubted that Cyrus was an exception to that rule.

“Ahh, here she is. The ever-elusive Beauty Queen, Dana Lawson. I imagined you prettier and less bloody looking. I was told that you were the most beautiful soul that has ever been seen.”

I felt my anger spreading through me like a wild fire. The knife reappeared in my hand, and I felt my grip tightening on it.

Cyrus’s eye drifted down to my hand. “I wouldn’t do that if I were you, tits. In fact, you can’t do what you are planning. If you notice, you can’t move any closer because of the protection barrier that I had my loyal psychic put up for me. He has done many wonderful things for me.”

I glared at him as he spoke to me. He smiled broadly.

“Oh, princess, it isn’t all that bad. I can see the appeal that Bastian, and even Brandon, had toward you. You look quite fuckable. Now, I’m sure you have a lot of questions, but fortunately for me, I can’t hear you, so I don’t have to listen to it. I will answer the one that I know is on your mind. I had special contacts made so I am able to see spirits. I may not be able to hear you, but this helps to know where you are. I also have alarms to notify me when a spirit enters a room that I am inhabiting, and my bedroom is off limits.”

It sounded like the bastard had everything figured out. I was surprised that he was that thorough, but dealing with the kind of spirits he did, it was smart. Smart and wealthy was always a dangerous combination. Something sinister or disastrous was bound to happen.

As I turned to leave, he stopped me. “Don’t worry, my dear. You will have something to do soon. I promise.”

With that, I left to explore the house a little more. It was huge and extravagant. It was no wonder he could house all the ghosts he wanted in it. There was little chance we would be in the same room at the same time. As I wandered aimlessly through the house, taking stock of what was considered my new home, I didn’t see any of the other ghosts, but I figured that I would in due time.

I returned to my room to find Bastian sitting on the bed. I hadn’t known he was there, but I was elated. I ran to him throwing my arms around his shoulders. When I pulled back, I noticed the look on his face wasn’t one of excitement.
