Chapter Ten

“Looking rough, my friend,” Caesar said as Jasper walked into the kitchen at Perdition.

He just grunted.

“Wild night?”

Jasper hesitated, then nodded his head. “Not, however, in the way you might imagine.”

Caesar waggled his eyebrows. “Tell me more. There’s tea in the study.”

Jasper shook his head. “I’ve things to see to. Anything interesting to report in my absence?”

“Not unless you consider Bow Street Runners interesting.”

Jasper frowned. “What?”

“Remember the Runner that came to the club when George and I…” Caesar waggled his hand.

“I do.”

“Well, it seems he was so shocked at the sight of Giles, gadding about half naked, he thinks we need shutting down.”

“Don’t be ridiculous. Why on earth would they be interested in us?”

“My thoughts exactly. Don’t worry, I’ll fend them off.”

“Thank you. Tell me if you need me to do anything.”

“Of course. Any interesting developments with your red-headed beauty?”

Jasper frowned. “We had an… interesting encounter.”

“Will you see him again or are you still pursuing your no-attachments policy?”

“No attachments.”

Caesar laughed. “It’ll come to you too. One minute your life is rumbling along nicely, next time you look about you, you’re in love and you won’t know what day it is.”

Jasper hesitated. “Are you really in love?”

Caesar gave Jasper a lopsided smile. “I am, my friend. I am.”

“And George loves you back?”

Caesar’s smile widened. “For some bizarre reason, he does.”

“I’m pleased for you.” It was true. He was pleased for his friend. He just hoped that the happiness would last, and Caesar wouldn’t end up hurt. It seemed to be a risk Caesar was willing to take.

Caesar gave him a mock salute and Jasper headed for his rooms, his thoughts very much back at the house with Alexander White.

He threw open the door to his chamber, and his valet followed him.

“May I assist in some way, sir?”

Jasper tried not to smile at the look of repressed, abject horror on Ford’s face at the sight of his hastily-tied cravat and sadly wrinkled coat.

“I need to change into something decent, and if you could put me back together in some semblance of order, I’d be most appreciative.”

Ford bowed and set about his task. As he did so, Jasper tried to stop his mind from wandering to the feel of Alexander White fast asleep, tucked in his arms.
