Chapter 7

In the morning light she checked her appearance in a mirror on the wall and quickly ran her fingers through her hair. Her red locks looked like they’d been tossed in the waves, but without anything to brush with, she did what she could. Amarine would be horrified. The thought caused her to smile, even as guilt grew. Amarine put on a tough facade for everyone, but Alea knew that it would be hard for her sister to find out Alea was gone.

Perhaps she could write another letter to explain about finding her true love. Plus Amarine was always talking about taking a grand adventure. Being sunburned, without magic, and turned into a human had to be the greatest love adventure to ever happen. Amarine would love the story.

“Well, well, well.” Trite’s voice said into the room.

Alea jumped and looked around.

“The mirror, Alea,” Trite laughed.

“How?” Alea asked as she took in Trite’s image in the glass.

“I’ve heard tales of magic mirrors and tried something.”

“Can you reach anyone at the palace?”

Trite shook her head. “Too many protection spells there, but the ship doesn’t have any. Is your skin red?”

Alea glanced at her arms, which were indeed pink and red. “Yes, being in the sun hurts.”

“Find this plant.” The mirror flashed to a spiky green plant. “The inside of it grows a gel that will help. How is love treating you?”

“I’m unsure.”

Trite’s smile disappeared. “True love isn’t instant Alea. It’s more than words in a story. Work with him and see how he treats others. Look at how you act with him. Do you encourage each other to be the best you can be?”

“When did you get so wise?” Alea asked.

“When I chose to live my life on my terms.”

“Could you send a message to Amarine for me? She’ll worry if she doesn’t get a letter.”

Trite nodded. “Leave any notes you want to send on the shore at night and I’ll make sure they get where they need to go.”

A soft knock on the door interrupted their conversation and Alea watched Trite’s image disappear from the glass. Yuran stood on the other side of the door, hand poised to knock again when Alea opened it up.

“Good morning, Prince Yuran.” She smiled up at him.

“Were you talking to someone?” He asked.

Alea smiled brighter, and lied through her teeth. “No, I just talk to myself sometimes.”

He frowned, much like his first mate had the day before upon meeting her. “Breakfast is being served on the island.”

Alea shut the door behind her. “Can I ask you a question.”

“Just one?” He smirked.

“To start. The day is young after all.”

He nodded, and they walked towards the ropes set up to get her to the row boat.

“Are you a pirate?”

He responded with a chuckle. “There are some that might call me that.”

“Will you tell me the story?”

He thought about it as they paused by the ship rail. “It’s not my story to tell.”

“Is your life not your story?” she asked.

“Not when it could put others in danger.” He reached for the rope to loop around her and she stopped him.
