As soon as Dave heard the front door slam he picked up the phone.

‘Black Moon Books; how may I help?’ said Phyllis.

Shit; I’m an idiot, he thought as he glanced at his watch; 12.40. Dave will be with Erica, in the park.

‘Um, Phyllis, now don’t be alarmed, I’ve just had a visit from the police…’

‘The police,’ she exclaimed. ‘Has something happened to Dave or…’

‘No, no; nothing like that; no. They were asking about Melissa; they seem to think she’s missing.’

‘She’s in Australia, dear.’

‘Yes, I know that, Phyllis, and that’s what I told them, but it seems that there is some doubt…’

‘Doubt? What sort of doubt?’

‘Well, I don’t know do I? They just said that Melissa had been reported as missing; they’ve even been in touch with that friend, Penny, that Melissa went out to join and she’s apparently told the police that Melissa isn’t in Australia, well, not with her anyway. Anyway, I forgot that you would be minding the shop. They’re on their way to speak with Dave, so be a dear and let them know where he is. I’ll give him a quick call on his mobile to warn him.’

‘Yes, alright dear; gracious me, the police, whatever next?’

‘Will you be alright? Do you want me to come over?’

‘No, no, I’ll be fine. I’ll see you later.’
