D eclan tried to maintain an edge of righteous anger as Lily’s car puttered off into the thick, seaweed-scented night.

He should slam the door and be glad to see the back of her.She didn’t trust him. She’d said the townspeople were right to dislike and fear him. That her parents had been right to protect her from him.

So why couldn’t he hate her?

The distant surf crashing on the beach roared in his ears as confusion surged in his brain. He’d set out to seduce her. Done it deliberately. With malice aforethought.

Hadn’t he?

He cursed the dull ache in the place where his heart used to be.

Was she right? Had he truly lost his soul?

It was a distinct possibility. He’d survived most of his life by locking away feelings and emotions that could hurt him. By wearing a mask of invincible cool that cowed competitors and won heated battles far quicker than any shouted bluster would.

But was there anything left under the mask?

When he and Lily were young he’d held nothing back. He’d shared his thoughts, his dreams, a piece of his heart. And she’d handed it back to him on a platter.

Since then he’d confided in no one.

Most days his mind dealt with practicalities: price-to-earnings ratios and tangible assets, bridge loans and leveraged buyouts.

Did he even have dreams anymore?

Lily’s mention of his motorcycle stuck in his mind. His beloved Kawasaki ZX9. He’d lavished more love, care and blissful hours of fascinated distraction on that bike than on any woman he’d met since Lily.

When he’d left Blackrock he’d stowed it in a corner of the old carriage house, flung a tarp over it and abandoned it without a second glance. Maybe because it represented a part of him he intended to leave behind for good. The impractical Declan who loved to live in the moment, to feel the sea air bite his skin, to roar with the wind along the cliff edge.

He blew out a breath. Damn. Just thinking about it got his adrenaline revving.

Was it still there?

The cool evening breeze crept under his shirt and made goose bumps rise on his skin. He really should close the front door and go catch up on some reading.

Why did it irk him so much that Lily was mad at him? He’d wanted revenge for the cruel way she’d treated him. Heck, he’d come up here today because he’d read the stories about a struggle for the old Gates factory. It had smelled like a fight and stirred his blood.

He’d been salivating for some intrigue and conflict, eagerly anticipating Lily’s flashing eyes and heaving chest.

So why didn’t it feel good?

He slipped out into the night and closed the front door quietly behind him. The cool air stung his skin, fresh and invigorating after a week in climate-controlled offices.

Gravel crunched under his feet as he walked toward the hulking shadow of the three-bay carriage house.

This was stupid. Even if the bike were still there, the sea air would have turned it into a mangled heap of rust by now.
