Chapter 9
The phone rang. Marsha picked up and answered. âBlack Management Group how may I help you? Hold please.â She pressed one button and then another. âMr. Brooks I have Mr. Williams on hold for you.â âOk, put him through.â Marcus answered while pulling a folder from his file cabinet. Mr. Williams was the father of Georgetown basketball star Chris Williams. Marcus was recommended to Mr. Williams by Georgetownâs coach to be his agent. Mr. Williams, Chris and Marcus had met on several occasions. Chris was impressed with Marcusâ knowledge and down to earth attitude. They had developed a trust. But both Chris and his father had wrestled with the idea of hiring Marcus to be Chrisâ agent or to go with someone more experienced and known. Chris had been approached by many agents long before he graduated with promises of money, cars and women. Under Mr. Williamsâ watchful eye they had narrowed the choice down to a few. Georgetownâs coach was highly thought of by Chris and his father and his recommendation of Marcus weighed heavily. Today would be the day to choose. Contract negotiations would begin soon and Chris did not have an agent yet. Up to now his father was handling matters. âMr. Williams, how are you?â âFine sir, how are you?â âThings are going well; how is Chris?â âChris is doing fine although heâs getting a little anxious with the season approaching and all.â âThatâs understandable; have you come to a decision?â Marcus asked getting straight to the point. âMr. Brooks you know something, I didnât raise my son the way I have all these years just to turn him over to some white folks when he is about to make some money. I have a good feeling about you and so does Chris. We need to start trusting our own you know what I mean. I mean we trusted them all these years and most of these guys retire unprepared and broke. Mr. Brooks, donât disappoint us.â âIâm glad you have a good feeling about me, thatâs important and I will not disappoint you. We are going to make Chris very rich. We are going to set him up for life I assure you. Every move I make I will explain to both you and Chris. Weâll make a good team. We are going to set a good example for others. I thank you for trusting me. Now, we have got to get down to business. First the three of us need to meet, then weâll talk with the team. Howâs your schedule this evening?â âThis evening is fine.â âGood, Iâll pick you guys up at six and then weâll eat and talk at my place. Is that ok?â âThatâs fine sir.â âAnd please call me Marcus from now on ok?â âOk Marcus Iâll see you at six.â âSix it is. Good bye.â Marcus hung up and then called Lisa to let her know they were expecting company later. After speaking with Lisa he called his Secretary.
