Chapter 9

As it turned out, however, there was more going on tonight than even Corky knew. For all their empathic sensory, orcas were still limited in their understanding of human motives. One aspect of human behavior was its bizarre inconsistency, often acting seemingly in direct opposition to their own survival

Case in point, the curious group of hominids that skulked along the coast, navigating the treacherous, rocky coast in a small outboard boat, loaded too heavy for the number of passengers aboard.

The surf was big and choppy. They had checked the weather reports—it was the stormy season, and their activities had been specifically timed to coincide with a big blow scheduled for the following night.

But tonight should be fine. Nice and quiet, at least long enough to do their work.

Nevertheless, even a calm night left this particular stretch of the energetic Pacific a bit hairier than one might think, particularly in the dark. The rocks were big and jagged and they played peek-a-boo with the waves. Ten-foot swells could drag your hull against an underwater reef like a missile striking from below. There was a reason the wide bay that bordered Ryder’s property had never been developed as a commercial port. It was the same reason, in fact, that Ryder had chosen it—it was not easily accessible. And therefore private.

Of course, privacy worked both ways. Dark and remote also meant you were not likely to be seen if you chose to trespass.

One of the little boat’s passengers kept a light fixed on the ocean in front of them—an ocean that, at the moment, served better than any guard dog.

But Maggie Kirkland had sneaked past a guard dog or two. It came with the territory, being the governor’s daughter.

Behind her, one of her companions shouted out, “How much farther?”

Maggie checked her GTS. “Another mile or so. Just around the fork.”

Truth to tell, the going was a bit rougher than even she had expected. They had to stick close to shore to avoid the big swells, but that meant navigating the cresting rocks that seemed to pop up from the surf like prairie dogs. The possibility of their little boat capsizing was a lot more real than it had been back on shore.

Not that it was going to stop her. If her father wouldn’t do something about Ryder’s little orca habitat, then she would do it for him. The right thing was the right thing.

As they reached the fork that stretched out around the bay, Maggie could see the cliffside for the first time. Still distant, the lights of the house shone like a beacon.

Maggie’s lips pursed cynically. Her father’s little trollop was up there with Ryder right now.

All according to plan.

Maggie had never liked Kate much—in fact, she thought her common-law “step-mother” was a complete bitch. She had, in fact, known Kate in college—the grad-student who fucked the professors. Maggie’s issues with her father were given a whole new dimension when Kate Foster had entered the picture.
