“No. No, you’re a dear but you’re not ready for that. Not yet.”

Her gut wrenched. She could not have Paul over to meet her daughter. No, never. Of this she was certain. Her daughter was innocent. What she was doing with Paul was fun; it might even be love, but it was sinful. Technically, by law, she was still married to her ex, Georgia’s father; the divorce was not final. It might never be; neither of them were eager to sign the papers. Oddly, she was not sure she wanted it to be over; her ex was the father of her child and she realized she still had feelings for him. Still, she wanted to keep fucking Paul. She needed the attention; and she needed the sex. But Paul could not be a father to her little girl. The child would not understand. And Paul was too immature and too needy.

7 When she woke up the next morning, it took her a moment to rouse herself.

“You know I can’t love you, don’t you? I mean emotionally.”

Paul stared into her eyes for a long moment. He shook his head. Then, he began cuddling her; his thick, muscular arms wrapped around her soft, thick torso and his fingers draped loosely against the tender skin of her breasts. His dark eyes were damp and red as he gently kissed her.

And suddenly Hera had an insight. She understood, almost as if she could read Paul’s mind, that he had processed things during the night, even as they coupled and spooned. He was beginning to understand. The words she had tried so desperately to say to him last night, that he had so resolutely refused to hear, were at last beginning to register in his consciousness. Now he got it. He realized that Hera cared for him, but could not marry him, refused to love him. That their love would have to remain as it was. There would be sex and plenty of it; and there would be affection. But they could not have the joinder, the emotional consummation that Paul might want, that Hera would prefer in a perfect world. The thought pained her; but, as he stroked her hair, Hera realized that Paul understood and accepted it.

“I love you Hera,” he said, “love you enough to take whatever you’re willing to give me.”

He kissed her again, gently, tenderly. His eyes were muddy pools.

After they both showered and dressed separately, to avoid morning sex, which would only make them both late, Paul drove Hera to the university in his old sedan. He let her off a couple of blocks before the campus, and well away from the psychology department building, so she could walk in on her own and nobody would know they had spent the last night screwing like wild animals. Hera’s tits still tingled from the joy of Paul’s mouth and Paul was whistling an odd, happy tune she was not familiar with. Now that they had a clear understanding between them, Hera was warm and happy.
