KRIS
FOR THE next few weeks, things remained the same except Gray arrived earlier and earlier on Saturday afternoons to pick up his brother. I would look at Jet and raise my eyebrows, but all I got was half a shrug.
I found myself enjoying Gray’s company just as much as Jet’s. The asshole I knew from before had disappeared, and in his place was a protective brother who took joy in sharing a laugh with him. Whenever I thought of Gray, I thought of a tough, seasoned Marine, loyal to God and country, who would fight to his dying breath to protect the ones he loved. Although Gray’s body wasn’t a Marine’s, his loyalty was just as emphatic.
Gray still had the same haunted look in his eyes, but it had diminished somewhat, and every now and then, I’d see his eyes sparkle. Especially when he smiled. He wasn’t as free with his smiles as his brother, but when he was, his whole face lit up and I swear you could power the national grid off it. My blood hummed when one of those smiles was directed at me.
Jet always arrived alone for our afternoon movie, but I would be jumpy, on edge, and couldn’t settle into the movie until Gray arrived. I’d tried to suppress my feelings for him over the last couple weeks, with limited success, but it was getting harder and harder to do the more time I spent with him. If Jet noticed my preoccupation, looking toward the front door every five minutes, he kept his thoughts to himself.
Jet situated himself in my usual armchair upon his arrival so I had to sit on the couch. So of course when Gray showed, there wasn’t anywhere else for him to sit, except on the couch with me. For all of Jet’s apparent innocence, he was anything but. He was as cunning as a fox.
I didn’t mind, though. Especially one afternoon when Gray arrived after a hard workout and he fell asleep with his head on my shoulder. When Jet padded down the hall to use the bathroom, I placed a light kiss on Gray’s head, breathing in his spicy scent of lemon and musk. Running my fingers through his hair, gentle enough not to wake him, I remembered how his silky strands had felt on the night he crept into my bedroom, and how much I had wanted him to stay. The hurt from that night was still there, but it had dulled and wasn’t as noticeable.
Feeling Gray’s warmth next to me sent a pleasant tingling right through my bones. I could get used to this, having him beside me, warm and comfortable. When I heard the toilet flush, I let his hair flop back down and placed another kiss on his forehead just before Jet re-entered the living room.
“He wants to tell you our story, but he’s scared… scared you’ll think less of him and break the friendship, not only with him, but with me,” Jet told me once he sat down.
