Grantham & Malory - 1888

He had heard them speaking about him and his recent activities. Three of his men had been gathered at the back of the jailhouse and Grantham had stopped at the corner when he heard his name mentioned. It was Samuel Withers who spoke in his high nasally whine and the other men laughed at what he had to say. Grantham had heard enough. He had heard Withers mention the words crazy and prostitute, they burned in his mind like a branding iron on a steers flank. His men had asked him a few times why he was spending so much time out in the woods. He had been staying most nights in a camp he had set up at the same place he had brought Malory to. When he wasn't forthcoming with an answer it seems his men had started to concoct all kinds of fanciful ideas. Grantham hated his men speaking about him in this way and he knew that rumours needed to be stamped out before they spread like a rot.

The following day he rode out with Withers to an area a few hours out of town. Grantham told Withers that some trappers had been keeping some girls in a shack and that they intended to bring them into town to sell to a local farmer. When they stopped to at a watering hole to let their horses drink, Grantham grabbed Withers from behind and cut his throat. He watched Withers scrabble about in the soft mud by the watering hole until he finally stopped moving with his face in the water. Grantham tied the corpses legs together and cinched the end of the rope to the saddle of Withers horse. He slapped the rump of the horse and it bolted off dragging the corpse behind him. Grantham watched the horse gallop away as it tried in vain to escape from the weight it was dragging from behind. He stood watching it until the horse cleared a rise and he could follow its progress no more. A weak man would of allowed Withers the time to try and explain himself, allow him the time to build a case for why he said such vile things about Grantham. The only way to deal with such treachery was swiftly and with no remorse.

Back in town as Grantham tied up his horse one of his men who had laughed along with Withers came over to him and leaned against the hitching post. Jim Kettle was a thin rake of a man and his pasty skin colour made him perpetually look like he was on the cusp of some malady that might take him to the grave. Many a man had underestimated him only to find themselves with a chunk blown out the back of their skulls before they even flexed their elbows. There was a time Grantham would have considered him a friend. That time was long ago when he realised that Jim was weak and lied like most men.
