Jac held the apple out on the palm of her hand.

Topsy took it and finished it in several bites. She turned sideways to them, and they reached through the railing to pat her flanks. When she wandered away, they swung up to the top rail and sat watching her.

“She’s quite portly, isn’t she? Or is that normal? I really know nothing about horses. The closest I ever came to them is when I took a date for a carriage ride in Montreal once.”

Lauren shifted uncomfortably. Oh, for heaven’s sake. So she took a date on a romantic carriage ride. It’s no business of yours.

“Topsy’s actually been as broad as a barn door for as long as I can remember. When I rode her as a kid, my legs would stick straight out from the saddle because they weren’t long enough to go around her belly.”

Jac grinned. “As a kid, eh? When was that—two years ago?”

Lauren elbowed Jac. “Funny, funny lady…not.”

The sun warmed their backs as they sat quietly, arms touching as their hands rested on the rail. Lauren closed her eyes and allowed the last of the stressful week to fade away. Right here, right now, everything’s okay. Tippy and her pups, Topsy, Jakie, Nick… They all worked their magic like I knew they would. And you, my friend…you’ve got magic in your pockets, too.
