CHAPTER FIVE

Quickly and quietly, they walked the few blocks to reach his parked car. So many questions were racing through Ally’s mind. Where were they going? Why did Benedict give those weird instructions to that burly troll? But, most importantly, why was she not worried or concern for her safety? Has she completely lost it? She knew that love was blind, but could it be possible that she was putting herself in danger?

“The door is unlocked.” He informed Ally. They stood in front of the latest model of a Ford Mustang. Black, bold and masculine; Ally thought the car suited him perfectly.

“Where are we going?” she asked at long last.

“We are heading to my place. In normal circumstances, I would have brought you home. We don’t know one another, and I would have been willing to have done this right. However, it’s a little too late for that. You will stay with me.”

“Don’t I get a say in this?”

He frowned seeming to mull this question over. Then he nodded, giving her a chance to bolt and make a run for it. Ally, testing how much of a say she had, took a step back, and instantly realized that this small action made him stiffen. Oddly, he looked contrite and stricken; almost as if that small gesture pained him. He closed his eyes and raised his hands to his temples. He started rubbing them as he waited for her answer. Would she follow him or go her own way? A part of her thinks it would be wise to head back home unto familiar and safe territory.

Finally, she took two steps forward, closing the gap between them. “How far do you live from here?” she asked.

Benedict opened his eyes and beamed. He looked so relieved. How could someone this happy, cause her any harm? Boldly, she opened his car door and slipped into his Mustang.

They arrived at his high-rise luxurious condominium penthouse within 15 minutes. Ally was flabbergasted by its immensity and grandeur. In dark colored woods, it was stylishly decorated with masculine, yet modern, fabrics. Perfectly shining marble floors, textured walls and floor-to-ceiling windows left her speechless. Immediately upon arriving, he went over to pour some drinks. He asked her what she preferred, and she replied that she only wanted a glass of water.

Within a few minutes, he returned from the kitchen with two glasses and led her towards, what appeared to be his study. Again, this room was utterly superb and elegant. Every corner of his study was filled with hundreds of books. At the center, there was a comfy-looking leather love seat facing a cozy fireplace. He paused before it, and motioned to her to join him. She sat beside him, instantly filled with warmth and peace. How was it that she was so at ease with him, a virtual stranger? She took the glass of water that he handed to her and sipped it. Did he add a slice of cucumber? Wow, so refreshing!

Benedict leaned back against the sofa and sighed.
