Luke, I’m pulling into the driveway now. Who do all these cars belong to?

The door’s open, Chuck. Just come on in. Luke spoke for Ryan’s benefit. “Chuck’s here.”

Ryan gave a nervous glance to the door, then nodded.

What’s with all the secrecy?

Vicky and Luke exchanged glances . Chuck…

Well, someone better start talkin’ when I come inside.

They all heard the door open then close. Sara sat rigid in her chair, staring at her hands. Chuck started talking loudly as he came down the hall. “Okay, everyone, the Chuckster is here. You can all start the part—” He rounded the corner. “…tay.” He came to an abrupt stop just inside the living room. “What the hell is she doing here?” he yelled, pointing at Sara.

Sara cringed at his tone.

Luke put a half-smile on his face, then pointed to Sara. “I’d like you to meet your destiny, Chuck.”

“What?”

Chapter 14

Chuck took a calming breath. “What kind of a sick joke are you trying to pull, Luke?”

Luke scratched his head. “Uh, it’s not me, bro. I just found out myself. You better have a seat. It’s a lot to take in.”

Chuck looked around the room. “Uh, I don’t think so. I’m outta here.”

Zeb stood as Chuck turned to leave. “You can’t walk away from this, son. They will find you and try to kill you. We are stronger together.”

Chuck half turned back. “ They who, old man?”

Zeb looked at Ryan. “What is it with this younger generation and showing respect to their elders?”

“ They who?” Chuck repeated.

“The demons seeking the powers of the white witches,” Zeb replied.

Chuck turned to Luke, cocking his thumb toward Zeb. “The old man’s joking, right?” Before Luke could answer, he turned to Zeb again. “Wait, did you say witches as in plural, more than one?” Zeb nodded, then Chuck looked around the room again before he spoke. “I know Vicky is supposed to be a white witch. I always thought that they were a myth.” He looked at Vicky for confirmation. “Where’s the other one?”

Vicky cleared her throat, then looked away as she spoke. “It’s my sister, Sara.”

Chuck took a sharp look at Sara. She cringed away from his glare. “Sister…” He furrowed his brow then glared at Luke. “They’re friggin’ sisters? How long have you known, Luke?” He cocked his thumb toward Sara. “Because you know that that one is at the top of my hate list.”

“Vicky found out this morning, and I found out this afternoon, Chuck. Please, just sit down…there’s more.”

Chuck looked at the empty spot on the couch, then back to Zeb. “I think I’ll stand. I’m not stayin’. For the record, witches don’t mean nothin’ to me, old man. I’d just as soon let the demons have them and rid the town of them.”

The angry growl that erupted from Ryan startled them all. His eyes turned golden as his skin rippled and bones began to snap and pop and fur began to cover his body. His nose elongated and razor sharp canine teeth distended from his gums.
