Chapter 19

Mickey wore a maroon jacket that glittered under the bright spotlight. He looked very comfortable, holding a microphone in his hand, strutting around on the stage. People sat at a few round tables on a raised platform. These were the teams, I guessed. There were a dozen or so rows around the stage for the audience. More than half the seats were full.

I don’t know how but Mickey happened to look up when I opened the door and entered the room. Our eyes met and his face lit up in a brilliant smile.

“You came.” He mouthed.

I shrugged, saying ‘Sure.’

The current game was just ending. I was glad I hadn’t been there for it because the topic was ‘rivers of the world’. How boring!

A list of the winners flashed on the screen with a few theatrics. Celebratory music trilled through the speakers and Mickey and a few staff members danced a little jig and gave away some token presents. It gave me a sense of déjà vu. I brushed the thought away, determined to have a good time.

New teams were forming and people were looking around for partners. Babs waved at me from a table and patted the seat beside her. I found myself going over.

“I’m not good at this,” I warned her. “Especially if they start asking about history or politics.”

“Relax, kiddo!” She laughed. “This will be fun. You’ll see.”

The topic for our game was displayed on the screen. It was 90s Movies. I guessed Mickey had something to do with it.

A middle aged couple came and joined us, leaving one seat free. Just before the lights dimmed, a man built like a tank took the seat next to me, sitting down with a thud. I almost groaned. What was Fletcher doing here? He greeted everyone at the table without giving me any special attention. I was good with that.

The quiz began. The first three questions were very easy. All of us knew the answers and agreed on them. Mickey asked the next question. What was the name of Meg Ryan’s character in Sleepless in Seattle? Annie Reed, I burst out. Babs gave me a high five and the couple smiled and bobbed their heads in approval. Fletcher cut me off.

“It’s Anna, not Annie.”

Babs gave a dramatic groan and sat back in her chair. The couple just laughed. I told Fletcher Sleepless in Seattle had been playing nonstop on the Lido deck and I had watched a bit of it just yesterday.

“And I have watched it at least a dozen times with my mom. I know every scene by heart.”

“Is your mom some kind of expert on movies?” Fletcher challenged.

Babs cackled until there were tears in her eyes.

“Tell him,” she urged.

I wasn’t going to take the easy way out.

“None better,” I quipped. “Anything she doesn’t know about 90s movies isn’t worth knowing.”

Fletcher didn’t cower. “Well, she isn’t here. Why don’t we take the majority view?” He looked around the table. “I guess you’ll all side with this slip of a girl.
