Three weeks had passed and the family was frantically in the midst of packing their things. Despite the circumstances, Shantel felt light and free, finally meeting the love of her life after a year of love letters and mystery. Her mother was due for another checkup and Shantel elected to schedule her own as well, mainly as an excuse for her mother to allow her to drive. She sat in the office, waiting on the doctor’s return and swooning over her handsome new love. She wondered what would become of them after she moved across the country and a pang of fear welled up in her gut. I can’t lose him. She thought as a tear welled up in her eye. Not after I just found him. The doctor stepped back into the room and sat in his swivel chair. He gazed up at her through his tiny specs and smiled.

“Well everything seems in order Shantel,” he said. “Your blood work came back fine.”

“That’s good, as expected. I take care of myself.” She beamed.

“Well there is one thing you need to know however.” He leaned in, staring intently, “You’re pregnant. Which means you will need to keep taking care of yourself over the next nine months.”

Shantel clasped her mouth in shock, her eyes wide from fear and elation. She stared at her doctor as the news finally sunk into her mind. Pregnant? Her heart sank, thinking of her career and her move to California. But her love for Gregory was strong, more so even than her need to become a swimsuit model. She thanked him politely and dressed, heading to the next room to retrieve her mother and hear the news of her appointment. The doctor repeated his usual diagnoses, nodding in agreement when she explained their move to a warmer climate. He had been pressing her to make that decision for a while; it just took the house being ripped out from underneath them to finally do it. They drove home in silence to find more chaos at the house. There was the bank manager once again, his two henchman standing behind, at war with her younger sister who shouted and tossed her hands in the air. She leapt from the car and stormed towards him, her fists clenched in anger.

“What are you doing here?” She shouted. “We have thirty days.”

“I said you had until the first of the month,” he smiled. “And you agreed. Or did you forget our verbal contract so soon?”

“Thirty days is the law,” she growled. “If you even think about putting that up I will call the police myself.”

They stood in deadlock, the bank manager motioning his two goons to go ahead with the installation. Shantel stepped in front of the door, blocking their way. The henchmen glared at her.

“Move out of the way ma’am, or we will be forced to move you.” One spoke up in a low growl.

“You won’t lay a hand on me if you know what’s good for you.” She shouted, though the fear was welling up.
