That was exactly what we did.

We went to our own little cove where a picnic table with a red and white spread waited under a large blue canopy and we ate with our feet bare and resting on the soft sand. Royce said he would have wanted to grill something but was told I should stay away from grilled foods during pregnancy since there was a chance the food could be undercooked and bad for my health. I knew that there were several things not allowed during pregnancy but I had to say I was beginning to feel smothered by all the restrictions.

Still, I didn’t complain, making the most of my time with Royce. After we ate, we relaxed on our sun chairs. It was so relaxing I fell asleep. Then just before sunset, we walked on the shore and watched the sun go down together. We went home after but spent more time together, watching ‘Look Who’s Talking’ in our bedroom while eating ice cream.

“I wonder what our baby will think of us,” I said when the movie was over, resting my head on Royce’s shoulder.

Royce shrugged. “I guess we’ll have to ask him or her after a few years.”

I looked at him. “Do you want to have a boy or a girl?”

“A daughter, I think,” he answered.

I rested my head on his shoulder again. “What will you name her?”

“I’ve always liked ‘Amber’.”

“Cute.”

“ ‘Veronica’ would be nice, too.”

“Nah. I don’t like ‘Veronica’. I like ‘Stephanie’, though.”

“Stephanie Amber Sullivan. There’s an idea.”

“Then we’ll call her Sam.”

“Not bad.”

“What if it’s a boy?”

“Then it’s a boy,” Royce said. “I’ll still love him.”

“What will you call him?”

“ ‘Kyle’?”

I paused to think about it. “I like the name ‘Hunter’.”

He touched his chin. “Hunter. Not bad.”

“And then we’ll decorate his nursery like a forest,” I suggested. “It will be green and brown.”

“And there will be…” He yawned. “Lots of stuffed animals.”

“Like stuffed rabbits? But no guns. Absolutely no guns whatsoever.”

“What about a rifle when he’s twelve?”

“We’ll talk about it, then,” I said.

In truth, though, I hoped he’d forget about it by then. I didn’t like guns at all, not when one killed my brother.

“And if it’s Sam,” I went on. “We’ll make her nursery like a fairyland. There will be fairies and rainbows and unicorns and sparkly things. The room will be mostly pink, of course, maybe with a dab of yellow…no, not yellow…gold…and maybe some mint green and powder blue. Just a little. Her crib will be pink, of course, and the rest of the furniture, too. And there will be a rocking pony…no, a rocking unicorn…and a swing with flowers. She won’t use it, though. I will instead of sitting on a rocking chair. And I think I want a golden harp. It doesn’t have to be made of real gold, of course. Maybe a wooden one even but it will be nice if it plays and…”

I stopped, realizing that I was talking only to myself. Somewhere in the middle of my nursery plans, Royce had dozed off and he was now snoring softly beside me.
