“Can I have a little more cake please, Miss Green?”

“Sure,” I answered Rebecca, giving her a small slice of cake, which she happily ran off with.

“Aren’t you going to correct her?” Charlene asked.

I shook my head. “It will only confuse her. Besides, it’s not that important.”

“Not important?” Charlene snorted. “If not for your new name, we wouldn’t be having those new beds or all the new appliances in the kitchen or even these meals that are far more scrumptious than before.”

I didn’t answer. Charlene was right, after all. It was all because of my recent marriage that the orphanage had changed. There were new appliances and pieces of furniture, new clothes, more food, medical supplies for the infirmary and plans to build a garden and a playground. It seemed as if the orphanage had been reborn.

It was amazing what money could do when it was used in the right way.

“You are happy with your marriage, aren’t you?” Charlene suddenly asked.

I looked at her, surprised by her question. Was I? Before I could think on it, though, the door to the dining hall opened and Timothy stood in the doorway with a large box in his hands.

“Oh, good,” he said. “Everyone’s here. I’ve brought you all a new television and a few computers.”

The room erupted in gasps.

“Oh, and there are new toys and books, too,” Timothy added.

The gasps turned into hurrahs.

“Oh, it’s good that you’re here, too,” he said when he turned to me. “Help me out, will you?”

I nodded. “Sure.”

It wasn’t the presents he brought, though, that completely won me over and convinced me he’d changed. It was the way he played with the kids and read to them, the way he sat among them and talked to them, genuinely listening. And the children all flocked around him, some fighting for his attention. Only when Charlene and Sally called them all and told them it was time for bed did they leave, all of them happy.

“You’re spoiling them,” I told Timothy as soon as we were alone.

“Am I? I thought I was just giving them what they needed,” he said. “Don’t tell me you’re jealous.”

“Me? Jealous?”

In truth, I was a little, since now the kids seemed to like him the most but I wasn’t about to admit it.

“Don’t worry, my dearest wife.” Timothy placed his arm around me. “As soon as we get home, you can have all my attention. We can talk and play if that’s what you want.”

I looked at him with a wide smile. “I think that’s just what I need.”
