IF MICHAEL were honest, this was the part of the case he loved the

most. He loved the excitement as pieces of evidence fell into place. As they drove back to Ponte Bonita, Michael felt strangely giddy at the idea of a real case, one that required actual police work.

Michael and Sarah took their positions at their desks and got started on making phone calls. While Sarah started with calls to Caroline Davies’s lawyer, Michael made a call to the Las Vegas Police Department. When he explained that he was Detective Michael Weiss from the Ponte Bonita Police Department in Florida and that he had some questions about Mrs. Davies’s arrest, he was connected to Sgt. Duncan Petrelli. Petrelli laughed softly when Michael explained what he was calling about.

“Yeah, I remember Caroline Davies. Difficult to forget that one.” “Why’s that?”

“Well, it’s not so much her. Although, as I remember, she was a bit of a handful. It’s who she was with when she was arrested.” Michael rolled his eyes. Petrelli was going to make him beg for the information. “Who?” he said finally.

“Diego Luz.”

Michael waited, but Petrelli didn’t expound, and so Michael had to say, “I don’t know who that is.” Petrelli scoffed. “He’s, like, the biggest drug dealer in Vegas. Not even Vegas. Most of the southwest. He’s got strong ties to the Juarez cartel. Meth and heroin mostly.”

“What was she doing with him?”

Over the phone, he heard Petrelli’s chair squeak. “They had dinner. He was too drunk to drive, and she thought she wasn’t. She was.” He lowered his voice. “She must be some kind of crazy alcoholic, though. She blew a point-two-one. And I didn’t have any idea she was drunk until she started to talk.”

“What was she doing with a drug dealer?” “My guess is that he’s her dealer. I don’t think she was working with him, but Luz has a history of providing pretty white ladies with drugs. Especially pretty rich white ladies.”

“So, what happened with this Luz character?” “He had three outstanding warrants. I probably wouldn’t have even run his information, except that he started mouthing off, so I asked him for I.D. He gave me a fake one, and when I called him by that name, Mrs. Davies laughed and said that wasn’t really his name. When she told me his real identity, I arrested him. Pretty good collar, if you ask me.”

“By any chance, does he have any tattoos?”

“Several. A gun on his neck. ‘Killer’ in Gothic script on his chest. Skulls on the backs of his hands. Real charming stuff.”

“Where is he now?” “He pled two of the warrants down to misdemeanors,” Petrelli said, and it was impossible to miss the bitterness in his voice. “He’s out on bail for the assault. Trial’s next month.”

“Is he still in Nevada?”

“He’d better be. He’s not supposed to leave the state.”

“You might want to check and make sure that he hasn’t slipped off.” Michael thanked Sergeant Petrelli and hung up the phone. His next call was to the county clerk’s office in Las Vegas.
