Chapter Thirteen
My mother left to meet friends that evening, so when eight oâclock rolled around, I was home alone.
I never really had dates pick me up at Motherâs house. What little I did in high school was out with girlfriends, occasionally meeting boys in burger joints or movie theaters. It had always felt weird to have anyone come for me at the estate, since it wasnât really my home.
Plus, our guesthouse was situated on a walking path, not a driving one, although Quinn had brought the carriage to my door. I wasnât sure what Bennett would do since you couldnât exactly drive a car anywhere near.
The doorbell rang promptly at eight. I took one last peek in the mirror. I wasnât sure how dressy this night would be. An art gallery could be anywhere on the spectrum from glitzy to ironic hipster. And an opening was different from just wandering in to take a look. One was fancy, the other acceptable in shorts and a T-shirt.
But this was Bennett. The man who wore khakis on Saturday. So Iâd settled on a safe bet. A deep red halter dress with a lot of swing. It was short and flirty, barely catching mid-thigh. Since I could picture Bennett twirling me in public again, this time I played it safe and wore ruffled boy shorts beneath it. Too many people with too many cell phones out in the world.
My hair was up again, mainly because the cold front was long gone. The air was blistering hot and the parking situation downtown meant walking. I also slipped on ballet flats for the same reason. Wrecking my feet with heels was never a good idea if I wasnât sure how much Iâd be in them. I got beat up enough in rehearsal.
Overall I looked rather unfortunately date-like. The main concession Iâd made to the fact that this was a friends-only evening was the understated makeup. A little mascara. A light lip gloss.
The doorbell rang again.
Crap. Iâd dawdled.
I hurried to the door, scooping up a tiny evening bag on a long string. The door opened with a whoosh as I flung it wide.
Bennett stood there waiting. He wore a suit but the jacket was slung over his arm. A cool blue button-down shirt was open at the throat.
âNow that is an incredible dress,â he said. He was about to say more when I interrupted him.
âSaid one friend to another.â I twisted the lock on Motherâs door and stepped outside. âI do believe you might melt in the heat if you put that jacket on in a Texas summer.â
âItâs just a prop,â he said. His grin was bigger than usual.
âIâm ready for you to wow me with your car,â I said. âI want something straight out of Fifty Shades of Grey.â
We began walking toward the front of the mansion. I figured he would park whatever he had brought out on the entrance circle.
âFunny you should mention that,â he said.
I stopped walking. âYou have a red room of pain?â
âA what?â
âFrom the book.
