Chapter Ten

Brodie rose before the sun and gently woke Julie, who was sleeping like an angel next to him. “Hey,” he whispered, “I’m sorry, babe, but I’ve got meetings all day. I’ll text you. Look after the baby.”

“Yep,” she said, clear as a bell.

“Mom hearing, huh?” he said with a laugh.

“Aw,” she said, smiling back at him. “Mom hearing? I like the sound of that.”

Brodie crammed twelve hours’ worth of work into the next eight. He took his conference calls from his office at Embarcadero Plaza, asked his assistant to book a suite at Harvey’s at Tahoe, then pawned the next two days’ worth of meetings to junior executives.

“What’s with the going AWOL? Are you having some surgery I’m not aware of?” his assistant asked dryly.

Brodie couldn’t blame Elizabeth. After all, he was a bit of a workaholic who never ditched out on the office when he could help it. In fact, he had a reputation for putting in as many or even more hours as his junior associates and hourly employees did. “No, Miss Snark,” he replied, “unless tying the knot is covered by my HMO.”

Elizabeth’s notebook fell as fast as her mouth did, and she flipped out, albeit in a very happy, flattering way.

“I think she’ll like it even better,” he remarked with a laugh.

“What do you mean?” Elizabeth asked.

“It’s a surprise. She thinks we’re just going ring shopping. I plan to surprise her.”

“And how’s that gonna work?” asked the assistant with a puzzled look on her face.

“Well,” Brodie said, “we’ll try on rings and buy the ones she likes. Then we’ll find the perfect gown and buy it, and so on and so forth, till we have everything we need and are ready to exchange vows. Easy peasy.”

“Maybe not so easy,” the assistant said.

“What do you mean? She’ll love the spontaneity.”

“It could really go either way. Either she’ll see it as the most romantic move of all time, or it will blow up in your face,” Elizabeth counseled.

“Why?”

“Because she’s a woman, silly.”

“I obviously know that if I’m marrying her,” Brodie said, rolling his eyes.

“You obviously don’t know that women like to plan their own weddings. We dream of that sort of thing from the time we’re little girls, putting white gowns on our Barbie dolls and forcing our Kens to hold their plastic hands.”

“So I’ll buy her another,” replied Brodie, shrugging as if Elizabeth was making far too big of a deal out of it.

“Hey, it’s your wedding,” she mumbled, followed quickly by, “and divorce.”

“Hey!” scolded Brodie. “Not funny. Not funny at all.”

“Sorry,” Elizabeth said. “You know me. I just tell it like I see it.”

“Well, you keep that up, and I’m gonna take back that raise I gave you.”

All day long, Julie bombarded Brodie’s phone with pictures and videos of Thomas as the boy emerged from the dreaded chicken pox. She pushed him on the swing in the backyard and sent a beautiful photo of his smiling, giggling, joyous face. She even captured him babbling, “Dadda,” which nearly brought tears to Brodie’s eyes.
