Chapter Nine

After dinner, Brodie revealed that he and Thomas were spending the night, and right on cue, his driver began carting in their sleepover essentials. “Just one night,” he assured her. “I know I should’ve asked your permission, but—”

“It’s fine,” she promised, “as long as the little one is comfortable with it.”

“He’s about gone anyway,” said Brodie. “He’s been wined and dined and is out like a tiny light bulb.”

Julie smiled again, one gesture that didn’t hurt at all.

When another unexpected knock came at the door, Brodie rushed over to peer through the peephole. “A couple guys in suits,” he said over his shoulder. “Were you expecting anyone?”

“No,” Julie said, shaking her head. “See who they are.”

“Yes?” Brodie asked, opening the door as wide as the chain lock would allow.

“Detectives Wyckoff and Davis of DCPD here. Is Miss Julie Reid available?”

“She’s...” Brodie began, then stopped. “Julie, are you okay to talk to the cops now?” he asked in a loud whisper.

“Sure,” she replied.

“She’s injured,” explained Brodie.

“Yes, we know. That’s precisely why we’re here, sir,” said the taller detective.

After he invited the officers inside, Brodie turned to Julie. “I’m going to take the baby in the other room,” said Brodie. “Let me know if you need anything.”

I only need you, Julie thought as the police sat down to question her. She sat patiently through a couple routine questions and listened as they told her what happened to Brodie’s ex, who was in a whole lot of trouble.

“We have photographs of your injury on file,” Detective Wyckoff explained. “You’ll be hearing from the DA’s office as well, probably within a few days.”

Though the interview was brief, it completely wore Julie out. All she wanted to do was lay her head down and go to sleep, but as soon as the police left, Brodie walked into the living room with an expression of awe on his face.

“Are you okay?” he asked. “I couldn’t help but overhear a little.”

“I’m fine,” Julie said. “How’s Thomas?”

“Sound asleep, down for the night,” Brodie said, then paused. “Julie, if you don’t mind, I’d really like to see what she did to you. The cops sounded pretty serious about it.”

Even Julie hadn’t really gotten a good look at her nasty souvenir, and it somewhat sickened her to know that someone had taken pictures of it.

Brodie instinctively felt her forehead. “Your kind of warm,” he said.

“It’s just from sitting under all these blankets,” she said. “If I weren’t so worn out, I’d take a bath.”

“Didn’t Tamara help you with that?” he asked.

“Not today. I really just want to sleep,” she said.

“Is your pillow comfy?” he asked, with a look of determination on his face. He was being polite but he was hovering, as if he wanted something.

“Okay. Let’s get it over with,” she said finally, then rolled over on her belly more easily than she thought she could.

He drew up her tank top and placed his fingers on her back gently. They were cool against her tender skin as he whispered in her hair, “Let me take you to Outer Banks.
