Chapter Seven

Next day Indie told the realtor that she could not take such a big house for herself and would like something smaller. The woman said the only thing she had was the villa she'd already seen on the same compound as Sasha and Indie said she'd take it. She didn’t dare ask Damn about where she was supposed to live when the holiday rush arrived. He’d said nothing more about their conversation at the house but at dinner in the hotel, he informed Laurent that he should bring his friend down from Paris after all. He would even provide the ticket.

“Do not pout.” He took Indie's hand on the table. “That house was in the bad spot by the water. You'd have been wiped out in cyclone season.”

“I wasn't aware I was pouting,” she replied.

“You were. And right when I am very happy. I am looking forward to this Christmas more than any other ever.

Sasha appeared with Bihjan trailing behind her as Damn was ordering cocktails. The sky was filled with a thousand stars and the air was luscious warm. It would soon be Christmas and Indie could not imagine being any happier. Damn took her hand on the table and she had to repress an impulse to take hold of Laurent on her other side.

“I have to fly to South Africa tomorrow with my father,” Damn announced.

“Tomorrow, so suddenly?” Indie felt her legs turn mushy. She felt nervous without his protection.

“Yes, we have business that will take at least a week. You will run the hotel.”

Indie would have looked behind to see who he was speaking to, but she was seated at the edge of the terrace, in front of a palm tree. “Me? But I don't know anything about hotels,” she stammered, totally in shock that he would trust her with such a huge responsibility.

“Pah. You do not need to make any decisions. I will know what is happening every day but you must be the boss. These people need a firm hand all the time or they will steal everything and sleep all day.”

“Am I a firm hand?” she said.

“Of course. You have my hand on your back,” he said, smiling at her.

“You are strong, Ind,” Sasha said. “You can do it.” Indie saw that Bihjan was looking at her with new respect. In one move Damien had imbued her with a regard that others would now conform to. She looked at Laurent, who was engrossed in his plate and avoiding her.

“You will have to go to Flamboyant every day as well. You can have my truck and driver, Sateesh, to take you where you need.”

“You are going to be the queen, Indie,” Laurent said. He was looking at her with not complete friendliness. “Ze shop and all the hotels to run.” She decided she would let Laurent have full control of the shop that was his anyway. Hopefully he wouldn't feel too snubbed if he had something of his own.

“Well okay then,” she told Damn. “But come back to me soon.
