Chapter 7

David made himself a second cup of coffee, thinking about the morning so far. His new bride slipping out of his arms and the bed had woken him, though he’d lain there for a few moments thinking about the day ahead. He was just starting to stir when she’d come out of the bathroom, the wide-eyed look on her face had almost made him laugh out loud, but he’d been afraid of hurting her feelings, so he’d managed to hold it back, at least until he’d stepped into the shower and the sound of the water would camouflage any sound she might hear.

Skylar re-appearing, wearing jeans and a thin sweater, when he was barely halfway through his coffee surprised him. His sister always took forever to get ready, even just to change clothes, so he’d not expected her for a while yet.

“Want another?” He lifted his cup so she’d know what he meant.

“I’m good.”

“Have everything you need?”

She looked at the ceiling for just a moment and he wondered what that was about but she spoke before he could ask.

“I’m good.”

“Then let’s get out of here.” He drained the last of his coffee and left the mug on the counter. He followed her out to the garage and helped her into the truck before getting into his own side.

They’d been in the car a few minutes, neither having said anything yet.

“You hungry?” David asked, glancing over at Skyler who was busy watching traffic and the people around them.

“I am.”

“Then why didn’t you say anything?”

She lifted one shoulder and glanced over at him. “It’s my job to make you happy, not to make things more difficult for you. You’d need to eat soon enough. I could wait.”

“Don’t do that. Don’t put yourself second.” He scowled across at her a moment. “You’re just as entitled to consideration and having your needs met as anyone else.”

She blinked then turned away without saying anything. David wanted to push the issue, but let it drop and instead quickly tried to figure out where they could stop for breakfast without going an hour out of their way and delaying their trip too much.

“What—?” Skylar turned and looked at him as he pulled into the parking lot of a grocery store. “I thought we were going up the mountain?”

“We will, but it’s going to be a long day. We’ll need food.”

She frowned as he parked the truck, but when she met him at the rear of the vehicle, her frown was gone.

Twenty minutes later, David carried several bags out and put them in the back seat of the pickup. By the time he’d finished getting things situated so nothing would tip or fall and make a mess, Skylar was in her seat and waiting.

“Ready?” He buckled in and started the engine. “Anything else we might need?”

“Not that I can think of.” Their coats were in the back, along with hats and gloves he’d grabbed on their way through the garage, as well as a blanket he kept folded behind the seat for emergencies.
