Chapter Six

Jake

“You’re far from okay,” Lindsey stated, her tone flat. “You need a hospital.”

“Yeah, well.” I looked down at my gashed arm, at the towel that didn’t quite stop the bleeding. “I used a box cutter to open a box. It slipped.”

In my glance back at her face, I saw her indecision, her reluctance to get involved. She caressed Caitlyn’s head while nibbling her lip, staring at the towel as though trying to decide on something. If I called an ambulance, Caitlyn would be left alone. If my beautiful neighbor agreed to take me to the local hospital, maybe she’d also look after my daughter.

“Come on,” Lindsey snapped. “I’ll drive you.”

“And Caitlyn?”

Her hard expression softened as she met Caitlyn’s upturned face. “I’ll watch her.”

“I appreciate this.”

I stood up, towering over her as Lindsey’s head barely reached my throat. Lindsey’s lip curled upon meeting my gaze again, then she turned and left the bathroom. Presumably to get her car. My arm burning, throbbing in pain, I followed more slowly, Caitlyn’s finger through my jeans belt loop.

“Honey, will you fetch my wallet?” I asked. “It’s on my dresser.”

“Okay.”

She darted up the stairs, Elsa trying to follow her on tiny legs. I sat in the front sitting room, watching through the window as Lindsey opened her front door to vanish into her house. She returned a moment later, locked her house, then started the Ford sedan in her driveway. She backed it across the street and into mine.

“Here, Daddy.”

I tore my eyes from Lindsey’s slender, graceful form to nod. “I need you to hold it for me.”

“Okay.”

Lindsey stepped inside, saw me, and beckoned. “I don’t have a child safety seat.”

“I think we’ll be all right for this,” I replied, standing. “She’ll buckle up, right, punkin?”

“Uh, huh.”

I sat in the front leather passenger seat while Lindsey helped Caitlyn with her seat belt. She then got in behind the wheel and put it in drive. I sensed her intense dislike of me even as I felt that we’d met before. However, my pain and still seeping blood prevented me from discussing why she hated me and why she seemed so familiar.

“Try not to bleed on my leather,” Lindsey commented, her eyes on the road.

“I’ll do my best.”

She said nothing more, though I caught her looking into the mirror at Caitlyn several times. At least she likes my kid. Even if she’s helping for Caitlyn’s sake, she’s helping. “I owe you.”

Lindsey shot me a hard look. But she said nothing. She drove quickly yet without breaking any laws to the small, rural hospital. Since I’d left this town after graduating high school, I thought the place might have grown, expanded. It hadn’t. It appeared exactly the same as the last time I’d been there. When a rival football team flattened me and broke two of my ribs.

Lindsey parked by the ER and helped Caitlyn out while I eased my way from the seat. Grimacing, sweating in pain, I dripped blood onto the pavement as I stood, trying not to fall over.
