I was nervous about meeting Jakeâs parents, but I didnât want to show it, for Zacâs sake, because heâd been tapping his fingers against the dashboard nervously the whole way there.
âWill she like her present?â he asked, sounding almost panicked.
âIâm sure,â I replied calmly.
âHow do you know?â
âWell, I asked Jake what she liked and he said making jewelry, so I think sheâll love it.â
âDo you think she will like the beads I chose? They are blue. Blue is the best color. Even though itâs normally not for girls. They like pink, but I donât like pink.â
âIâm sure she will love the blue.â Weâd been to a craft store earlier that day to buy Lisa a present, and then Iâd painted her a card and Zac had written in it.
âDid you bring my water bottle?â He fiddled with his seat belt now.
âYes.â
âDid you bring my binoculars?â he asked.
âI did.â
âDid you know Dad is getting married?â he asked. I whipped around in my seat and stared at him.
âHow do you know?â
âI heard Mom saying it on the phone, âCan you believe it, Sue. Heâs actually marrying that woman. Heâs actually marrying that homewrecking bitch.ââ
âWhoa!â I held my hand up.
âThatâs what Mom said!â
âI know. I know. But remember, thatâs a bad word and you canât say it in front of people.â
âLike Iâm not allowed to say crap?â
âExactly like that.â
âWhy canât I say bitch?â he asked again.
âBecause itâs considered offensive.â
âA bitch is a female dog.â
âI know. But it can also mean something else. And the other thing is a bad word.â
He was quiet and thoughtful for a while before speaking again. âI donât think they should allow words to mean two things, itâs too confusing.â
I smiled at him. âYouâre right. There should be a rule about that.â
âThere should.â
I looked at him for a while as he shuffled in his seat. âSo, how do you feel about Dad marrying Maddy?â I asked.
He shrugged. I think this complicated emotional concept was probably beyond his grasp, but I felt like I needed to ask it anyway.
âHe doesnât love Mom anymore,â he stated matter of factly.
âWell, not in that way.â
âWhat way?â
âHe doesnât love her in a romantic way anymore,â I explained.
âHow many ways can you love someone?â he asked.
âA lot. Romantically, or in a friendship way, a brother-sister way, like I love you, or the way you love Miss Hiss,â I explained. There was a pause and he looked out the window thoughtfully.
And then he spoke and my heart felt like it wanted to explode. âI love Lisa. Sheâs my best friend.â
I reached out and was just about to put my hand on his shoulder but pulled away. âItâs good to have a best friend,â I said as we pulled up to Jakeâs house.
âDo you love Jake?â
âWh-what? No . . . what? No.â I spluttered. Hearing those words out loud made me feel all strange and tingly. âPfft! Nooooo!â
âSo, heâs not your friend, then?â he asked.
âUh . . .â I was stumped by my blunt brother. âItâs complicated.â
âHow?â he pressed.
