Alistair

As Remy finished up a story about how Wright told her he was a father, her smile had turned wistful. It had been a solid hour of her telling stories and them laughing together, and the mugs of hot chocolate lay discarded by the foot of the couch.

She had undone her hair and it fell in golden waves down her shoulders and back, framing her heart-shaped face. Alistair tried hard not to stare at her rosy lips or get stuck on the way her nose crinkled adorably – similar to when she was angry - when she laughed, but everything about her was straight-up irresistible.

“I never did find out who Jonah’s mother is…” she said, looking up at him expectantly, like he might have the answers.

“I didn’t either,” he admitted, pulling one knee onto the couch. “Didn’t even know the boy existed, really.”

Without even consciously making the decision to do so, Alistair just felt it was time he and Remy share what they knew with each other. This dance they were doing wasn’t helping anyone.

He found that talking to her came easy to him. That took him by surprise, as his usual solution when he had something on his mind would be turning to a nice glass of Scotch.

Remy leaned forward, a strand of hair falling to her cheek, waiting for him to continue. He sighed, sparing one last thought at how it might be safer to stay quiet before speaking anyway.

“After I found Jonah, I looked through all the records I could get my hands on. Officially, Wright didn’t have any kids and you were the first person I’ve spoken to that even knew about Jonah. There’s no birth certificate for Jonah, either. It’s like he doesn’t exist.”

“That means he wasn’t born in a hospital,” Remy murmured, resting her chin on her hand. “Wright really didn’t want anyone to know about his son?”

“I guess so. There was something going on. The day of the fire, I came home to a note on my front door. It was Wright, asking me to meet him at his cabin. That was out of character, to say the least. I think he might have been desperate enough to consider asking me for help, but I got there too late.”

Alistair had to put some effort into keeping his voice level. Guilt draped over him heavily.

“You saw the fire?” she asked, voice low and eyes wide.

“Yes. I called out to Wright, but there was no answer. Then I heard Jonah crying, so I rushed inside and managed to get him out. But by then, the house was already engulfed. I couldn’t go back inside to look for Wright.

“I’m sorry.”

Remy took a moment to process it, leaning back into the couch. Waves of emotion flitted across her face before she spoke again. Alistair was practically holding his breath, waiting for her response.

“You don’t have to be sorry. You saved his son.”

He didn’t know what to say. He’d never considered himself a savior, just a guy doing what he thought was right.
