Heâd waited at least a quarter of an hour, without moving, trying to make a sense of what heâd seen, of whom heâd seen. Was he the only one to have that piece of information? No, Graham knew, too; of course he did.
Phillipsâs excitement about that revelation was only partly clouded by the fear of being seen and the doubt about how he should exploit it to his own advantage. Perhaps for once he shouldnât only think about himself. Perhaps.
He rose from his kneeling position, but stayed crouched down to check beyond the bush.
A shuffle made him flinch and lose balance. In a moment, he found himself lying amongst the plants, his back wet, while a white cat with grey markings stepped beside him.
Phillips started laughing hysterically. Now he was all splashed with mud.
What the fuck? He must regain control of himself and leave that place.
There was another burst of thunder in the sky while he stood up and headed out of the forest. As soon as he came out of his shelter under the branches, he was met by a light drizzle.

His hand trembling, he pulled the remote control out of a pocket and unlocked the doors. He hurried into the vehicle, locked it in an excess of caution and leant against the steering wheel.
He was wheezing; he was restless. He forced himself to take deep breaths.
He felt so far away from his comfort zone. He needed a crowded place, a table, a fast Internet connection, and a tablet.
He turned on the ignition. The faster he left that place, the sooner he would regain some peace and lucidity.
He drove out of the unpaved street and then onto the tarmac road. He left the two buildings behind and for a few hundred metres he was forced to proceed among the trees, but he could already see the intersection at the end of the street and the rows of houses. As he reached it, he turned left, following the directions of the satnav. Heâd muted its voice because it was getting on his nerves, so from time to time, he glanced at the screen to make sure he was heading in the right direction.
He wanted to drive faster, but it was a zone with a low speed limit. The last thing he wanted was to be stopped by
