Chapter Ten

No one said anything for a long few minutes that seemed to stretch on for days. For a moment I thought my rant might have sunk in; then I realized that Damon and Brodie were staring at me with the oddest expressions on their faces. I attempted to change the tone of the confrontation. “Thanks for clearing them out back there. I guess we should continue our hunt for the spear.” I let out a ragged sigh, wishing Jewels was here. After all of this, I was now beginning to second-guess my plan. I rubbed my hands over my face and walked toward the doorway stopping, just short of the threshold as the look on both Brodie and Damon’s faces gave me pause. Was that grief? Were they grieving for Jewels too?

Throwing my hands in the air, I blew out a breath. “What? Yes, what happened back there was shitty and things are so not going as I planned. Levi said she’d be back. I didn’t advocate for her to do that. I hated it!” My voice was rising to the level of hysterics.

Levi came to my side and put a protective hand on the nape of my neck. His touch was so gentle that I turned to glance up at him. He wasn’t even looking at me. It was then that I realized neither Damon nor Brodie had crossed into the hallway we were in. And Jewels had said that if she came in here she wouldn’t return.

Brodie went down on one knee. “I’ve failed you, my Queen.” He sounded pained and extremely distraught.

“You didn’t fail me. Please, Brodie, get up. We can fix this.” I thought he was talking about my failed plan but now I was beginning to realize he wasn’t. He bowed his head and didn’t look back up at me. I started to go to him but Levi stopped me, giving me the tiniest headshake. What was I missing?

Damon was breathing heavily, then began to pace in front of the door.

“Goddammit!” Damon shouted and punched the wall.

I jumped. “What?” He didn’t respond. I waved my hands in front of his face and he didn’t flinch. “Oh shit.” He couldn’t see me.

I looked back up at Levi. “What the hell is going on here?”

“They think you’re dead.”

“Why would they think I was dead?” He didn’t respond. Then it clicked. Neither one of them had seen me. They’d been looking beyond me. A chill ran down my spine as I slowly turned around to see my own body lying in a bloody heap on the floor. My blood ran cold. I’d done this once before, left my body completely. Levi had gone apeshit. I walked over and stared down at my lifeless form.

“When they see you again they’ll know.”

I was way ahead of him on that one. They would know that I couldn’t die.
